The newsstands are part of the city's efforts to improve the appearance of streets and neighborhoods. The newsstands' design, featuring large glass window, will help the customers to see what is on sale at a glance. An electrical screen on the newsstands will announce immediately the arrival of. the latest papers. There will be 1,000 newsstands by the end of the year. The newly formed company will manage the stalls. According to sources from the company, over 80 percent of the people hired to operate the stands will be recruited from laid-off workers. This means the project will help ease the city's unemployment pressure, sources said. All recruited will undergo a training programme and be dressed in green uniform. Municipal Vice Party Secretary Gong Xueping said the installation of the 100 stands was just the first step towards the objective of setting up 1,000 stands in the city by the end of the year. He said the creation of the stalls would be of particular significance to the enhancement of the city's spiritual civilization. He also made some suggestions regarding the location, design and construction of the new stands and the renovation of the existing newsstands.

单选题Deep inside mountain near Sweatwater in East Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by the " Guinness Book of World Records" as the world"s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive and historical cave system called Craighead Caverns. The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian Nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. Approximately (大约) one mile from the entrance, in a room called "the Council Room", many Indian artifacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapon and jewelry. For many years there were persistent rumors (传言) of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water. Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors. More than thirteen acres (英亩) of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found. Even though teams of drivers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown.

单选题Computer programmer Brendan Tammy earned £55,000 a year by designing new com-puter games, yet he cannot find a bank prepared to let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18. He works for a small company in Liverpool, where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's biggest headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot drive a car, or get credit cards (信用卡). Brendan got his job four months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels (普通考试科目) and working for a time in a computer shop.“I got the job because the people who run the company knew I had already written some programs." he said. "I suppose 55,000 pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than that this year." He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 20 pounds a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare time is spent working. "Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school," he said. "But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. ! knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement (退休) is a possibility. You never know when the market might disappear./
