单选题B Mr. Stevenson was the owner of a general appliance store. He had seen many newly-weds coming into his store to shop for their first refrigerator, washer and dryer and air-conditioner. Pen and pencil in hand, they would ask him a lot of questions about price, features and after-sale services, but they would usually walk away at the end of their inquiry. The other day a young couple came into his store. They asked him all the usual questions and he answered all them patiently. But when he suggested an order at the end, they replied firmly, "We'll have to look around places first." Although feeling a bit disappointed, Mr. Stevenson did not show it. Instead, he smiled, moved closer and said, "I know you will go to Discount Dan to look at the price tags. That's perfectly understandable. I do the same. In fact, they sell the same stuff as we do. But if you buy things there, there is something you will not get. And that is me. I come with everything I sell. I've been in the business for thirty years and in a few years' time I'm going to give my store to my daughter and son-in-law. I hope they will carry on the family business. I stand behind everything I sell and I will make sure that you will never regret buying things from me." After this short speech Mr. Stevenson offered the young couple some ice cream to thank them for their interest. Impressed by his honesty and sincerity, the young couple decided to place an order.

That cold January night, I was growing
sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the
morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week
away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my
part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked,
I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life bad
become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under
tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep
warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were
still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me: I
turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street
was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me
nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building
and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my
wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired
anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I
searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be
found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the
garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice
called from the inside, "Lily Smith?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this
man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an
aroused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding
up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got
into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, trot I had gotten my wallet
back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the
city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each
other.

Oh! I have just had such a lovely dream! And then
I woke,And all the dream went out like kettle-steam,Or
chimney-smoke.My dream was all about -- how funny, though!I've only
justDreamed it, and now it has begun to blowAway like dust.In it I
went -- no! In my dream I had --No, that's not it!I can't remember, oh,
it is too bad,My dream a bit.But I saw something beautiful, I'm
sure--Then someone spoke,And then I didn't see it any more,Because I
woke. What do we do every night, whether we know it or not? We
dream. Researchers have found that We dream about the same amount on nights that
we remember our dreams as on the nights that we don't. The amount of time we
sleep is broken into cycles and states. There are two states of sleep:
The first state, is called NREM, or non-rapid eye movement. It consists of
four stages: Stage 1 is when we feel relaxed and sleepy. Stage 2 is when we move
into a light sleep. We don't dream in these two stages. Stages 3 and 4 are
called slow-wave sleep. In these stages, we are in a deep sleep and the dreams
we have are ones we don't usually remember. The second state is
called REM, or rapid eye movement. This is when we dream the most and have the
dreams we remember the most. For many people, their REM dreams are the most
meaningful and visually exciting. Approximately three-fourths of our total sleep
time is spent in the NREM state and one-fourth in the REM state. We sleep by
cycling through these states. Throughout the night, we experience four to six
NREM/REM cycles.

Three men got to Dover station a few
minutes after nine o'clock one evening. They asked a guard, "What time is the
next train for London?" The guard said, "You've just missed one.
A train goes every hour. The next one is at ten o'clock."
"That's all right," they said, "We'll go and have a drink." So off they
went to a bar (酒吧间). A minute or two after ten o'clock they came running and
asked the guard, "Has the train gone?" "Yes," the guard said.
"It went at ten, as I told you. The next one is at eleven o' clock."
"That's all right," they said again. "We'll go and have another drink." So
they went back to the bar. They missed the eleven o' clock train
in the same way. Then the guard said, "Now, the next train is the last one. If
you miss that train, you won't get to London tonight." Twelve
o'clock came, and the last train was just starting out when the three of them
came out of the bar running as fast as they could. Two of them got in the train
just as it was leaving, but the third one didn't run fast enough, and the train
went out leaving him behind. He stood there looking at the train and laughing,
as if (好像) to miss a train was the best joke in the world. The guard went up to
him and said, "I told you that this was the last train. Why didn't you come
earlier?" The man kept laughing until tears came into his eyes.
Then he caught hold of the guard and said, "Did you see the two men get into the
train and leave me here?" "Yes, I did." "Well, I
was the only one to leave for London. They were here only to see me
off!"

单选题France, England, and Spain were the three European powers in the New World. Each had come for different purposes. The first Spanish came to the New World searching for wealth, power, and glory. There they explored(探险) and conquered much of North, South, and Central America. The English, on the other hand, generally came to build new land. They built settlements(殖民地) along the coast. Different from both Spain and England, the French were less interested in conquest(征服) than in trade. Their first settlements were trading posts(贸易区) where they sold cloth, knives, and guns to the Indians for the skin of the beaver(河狸). Like the Spanish, they seldom brought their families. Unlike the English, they didn't fight against the Indians for the possession of the land. Because there were far fewer French than English in America, they did not threaten the India way of life as the English did.
