We were beginning to get more and more
fed up with the "holiday by the sea". We always used to go to the south coast
regularly for a fortnight every summer. There was not a chance to have a proper
summer holiday last year, so we decided we'd better have some sort of a winter
holiday. Some friends of ours told us we might not enjoy a skiing holiday, that
it was always so cold you had to go skiing just to keep warm. We only had eight
days instead of our normal fortnight a way. All together, with the return
flight, accommodation (住宿), etc. , it came to about £ 135 for the three of us.
And it was worth every penny, I mean. I work hard all the year round. I need a
complete change and I'm willing to pay for it. I'd certainly recommend a holi
day like this to anyone. We saved up for it;, by the way, by cutting down on
luxuries.

单选题D The idea of "evolution" is very clearly shown in the story of horse. Millions of years ago, the horse called Eohippus with small teeth and four toes lived in the ground where the plants were easy to chew. Because of changing climate and plants, horses with larger teeth, three toes, till one toe appeared. Finally Eohippus died out and the one-toed survived so well over the grasslands by the time the first man appeared on earth. Darwin considered all modem animals had gradually developed and so had man. The earliest men, with sloping foreheads and much smaller brains, like Eohippus seem to have died out—the weak ones died out and the well- equipped ones survived. Also, like the animals on the different Galapagos Islands, men developed differently according to the condition in which they lived. People living in very hot countries developed black skins, which are good protection against the sun's rays, and people like the Mongols and Eskimos living in very cold climates have flatter faces and rounder bodies than people else where, to protect them from the cold.
