单选题Flying over a desert area in an airplane, two scientists looked down with trained eyes at trees and bushes. After an hour's flight, one of the scientists wrote in his book, "Look here for probable metal. " Scientists in another airplane, flying over a mountain area, sent a message to other scientists on the ground, "Gold possible. " Walking across hilly ground, four scientists reported, "This ground should be searched for metal. " From an airplane over a hilly wasteland a scientist sent back by radio one word: "Uranium. " None of the scientists had X-ray eyes: they had no magic power of looking down below the earth's surface. They were merely putting to use one of the newest methods of locating minerals in the ground... trees and plants as signs that certain minerals may lie beneath the ground on which the trees and plants are growing. This newest method of searching for minerals is based on the fact that minerals deep in the earth may affect the kind of bushes and trees that grow in the surface. At Watson Bar Greek, a brook(小溪) six thousand feet high in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, a mineral search group gathered bags of tree seeds. Boxes were filled with small branches from the trees. Roots were dug and put into boxes. Each bag and box was carefully marked. In a scientific laboratory, the parts of the forest trees were burned to ashes and tested. Each small part was examined to learn whether there were minerals in it. Study of the roots, branches, and seeds showed no silver. But there were small amounts of gold in the roots and a little less gold in the branches and seeds. The seeds growing nearest to the tree trunks had more gold than those growing on the ends of the branches.

单选题 Netasha The recent university students among you may have had a culture shock: with no parents peering over your shoulder to check on homework and no teachers looming with threats of detention, independence reigns. As such, the temptation to give in to the power of procrastination when you should be working is suddenly very strong! Procrastination takes many forms. Things like checking if you have any unread emails. Perhaps seeing if you have any new text messages. Then, with mobile in hand, taking the time to change the ringtone, just before phoning a friend to tell them about your new ringtone. When they tell you that they haven't finished their essay either, it's time to go and make a cup of tea, do the washing up and make a sandwich. Shaikh Once you've put an essay, project, or revision stint off until the very last minute, you then have the strenuous task of completing it under pressure, which makes it seem deceptively difficult. As a result, the next time you have to knuckle down you remember it as being something horrendous, so you put it off again—and so it goes on. Mark Resist the temptation. Even if your chosen distraction isn't utterly pointless, remember that you would have much more fun doing it if you got the most pressing burden of what you're supposed to be doing out of the way first. So, be paradoxical and put off procrastination! Thomas The prospect of sitting down and doing nothing but write an essay for a few hours straight can be daunting enough to stop you doing it at all. So, make it more achievable by breaking it down. If it's a 2,000 word essay, reward yourself by taking a half-hour break alter you've reached 500 words. Make sure your target is one of quantity rather than time, though: if you tell yourself you'll take a break after an hour of work, you could spend the entire hour producing three sentences then gleefully skip off. Also, keep said break to half an hour: if you use it to watch an episode of your favorite show, make sure you don't end up watching the entire box-set. Peter "Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task"—so goes the quote from late American psychologist William James, and he has a point. Once you've triumphed over that elusive essay or properly prepared for your exam, you'll feel much better with yourself. You may even find that the prospect of rearranging your socks has suddenly lost its allure (strangely enough), giving you the opportunity to get out there and do something exciting with your time! Now match each of the people (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: There are two extra statements. StatementsA. While doing an essay, we should make it more achievable by breaking it down.B. We should only pay attention to the quality and forget about the time.C. If we get the most pressing burden of what we're supposed to be doing out of the way first, we can easily have fun.D. Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. E. Things like checking if you have any unread emails or perhaps seeing if you have any new text messages are the typical forms of "Procrastination". F. Once you've put an essay, project, or revision stint off, you will be likely to put it off again. G. If you tell yourself you'll take a break after an hour of work, you will definitely spend the entire hour working efficiently, then go to enjoy your free tim

单选题Nearly 5,000 years ago, during the Late Stone Age, people began building Stonehenge. It became a long-term project. People added to the site for more than 1,500 years. Most likely Stonehenge was first built as a place to hold religious rituals (仪式) and bury the dead. But experts (家) are not sure because there are no written records telling us what took place at Stonehenge. At first the site was just a circular ditch (沟渠). Within the circle were two burial hills, and a smaller circle of 56 holes. Scientists have found ashes in the holes. They believed these are from the burning of the dead bodies. But Stonehenge may have been more than a ritual site. Some experts suggest it was also used as a huge calendar (日历) for watching stars. Outside the entrance of the construction stands the Heel Stone. On the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, a person standing at the center of the circle can look out through the entrance and see the first rays of the rising sun hit the top of the Heel Stone. At the winter solstice, the year's shortest day, a person standing at the entrance can look into the circle and see the setting sun between the stones of a trilithon, formed by two standing stone posts topped by a stone in flat position. In this way Stonehenge may have marked the passing seasons. The position of the stones and holes shows that Stonehenge may also have been used for watching the moon and stars. The construction may even have been a huge prehistoric" computer" used to study other natural objects in space. The Stone Age people in the area were farmers. Perhaps they used Stonehenge to figure out changes in the weather and to time the planting of their crops.
