单选题{{B}}Text 1{{/B}} The human nose has given to the language of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, obviously, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano de Bergerac said a large nose showed a great man — courageous, courteous, manly and intellectual. A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, made an interesting comment about Cleopatra's nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world! Historically, man's nose has had a principal role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness: anger, jealousy and revenge. In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, {{U}}to hold up one's nose{{/U}} expresses a basic human feeling — pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things, and places. The phrase, {{U}}to be led around by the nose{{/U}}, shows man's weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, a person who {{U}}follows his nose{{/U}} lets his instinct guide him. For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase {{U}}to have one's nose put out of joint{{/U}} is very descriptive. The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a competitor. Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542. This is only a sampling of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are a number of others. However, it should be {{U}}as plain as the nose on your face{{/U}} that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

单选题 Americans are getting ready for the biggest soccer event in the world. For the first time the world cup soccer competition will be held in the United States. While millions play the game around the world, soccer or football has only recently become popular here. It is only in the last 3Q years that large numbers of young Americans became interested in soccer. Now it is the fastest growing sport in the country. A recent study found that almost 18 million young boys and girls play soccer in the United States. The study also found that soccer is beginning to replace more traditional games like American football as the most popular sport among students. And so, when the world cup begins next week, more than one million Americans are expected to go and see the teams play. Organizers say this year's world cup will be the biggest ever. All the seats at most of the 52 games have already been sold. Soccer has been played in the United States for a little more than one hundred years. But how did the sport come to this country? And how long has it existed in other parts of the world? No one knows exactly where the idea for soccer came from, or when people began playing the game. Some scientists say there is evidence that ball games using the feet were played thousands of years ago. There is evidence that ancient Greeks and Romans and native American Indians all played games similar to soccer. Most experts agree that Britain is the birthplace of modem soccer. They also agree that the British spread the game around the world. Unlike the game today, which uses balls of man-made material or leather, early soccer balls were often made of animal stomachs. The rules of early soccer games also differed from those we have today.

单选题A recent study demonstrated how powerful a few words can be: Forty competitive tennis players were shown digital images of balls coming their way. Just before each ball appeared, the players saw or heard comments like "Good shot" or "Bad shot. " The reaction times of players hearing negative remarks were measurably slower. And these were athletes who trained frequently to play a consistent game and not make unforced errors. What is the explanation? Negative feedback weakens anyone's belief in his or her ability to succeed. But if you can hold on to a winning attitude, you'll make a greater effort and also create positive drive. Confident people inspire others; opportunities seem to come their way more often. They become magnets for success. Learn the importance of giving yourself pep talks, and keep the voice in your head positive. The best athletes' success is rarely due to raw talent alone. It's because they're simply better prepared. They stay focused, they're willing to work as hard as they need to, and they keep the positive voice in their heads switched on. Perhaps the most important aspect of being your own coach is to do what any outside adviser-or a good parent, for that matter—would preach: practice, practice, practice. Avoid individuals who suck your energy and diminish your confidence. Hang out with the people who see you at your best, and remind you about it very often. Pessimists drag you down, as do whiners and critics. If there's one winning behavior that people building confidence should model, it's the willingness to get back into the game after a setback. Don't nurse your wounds. There are, however, important warnings. Panicking can compound a small misstep by causing you to lose your head and forget to think clearly. If you suffer a terrible loss, give yourself time to absorb the blow. Don't deny the hurt or try to solve the problem immediately. Gather your support system around you and simply get nurtured. Sitting around and thinking about your loss is the worst thing you can do to solve your problem.
