单选题"Come," said Father at last. "It is late. We must go home. You can watch the fire works as we go." "Why do we go so soon?" asked Luis. "Everyone is staying." said Father. "But we have work to do." Father led the way through the crowds to the bus. People were still dancing and there was music. Soon they were in the bus and out on the road. Few people were on the road tonight. Everyone on the bus watched the fireworks light the sky. The sound of the music and dancing faded in the distance. Tonight it was not dark on the road. There was a full moon. Pedro and Maria could see the fields around them. At last they reached their little farm high in a village of the Andes Mountains of South America.

单选题What do you do when you want to learn the meaning of a (21) word? If you're (22) most people, you do one of two things. You ask someone to tell you the word's meaning, or you look (23) the word in a dictionary. The fact that you can look up words in a dictionary can be (24) to a man named Noah Webster. He produced the first dictionary of American English. Noah Webster was a person who (25) words. He was born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1758. Webster studied at Yale and later became a teacher and a writer. In 1782 Webster was teaching at an elementary school in Goshen, New York. He saw that the schoolbooks he was using left (26) something he felt was important. The books Webster (27) to use in his teaching came from England. These books were just (28) for teaching English children. But they paid no (29) to American culture. Remember, the United States had only just (30) its independence from England. Americans still educated their children the same way the British (31) . Noah Webster wanted to give his students an education that was strongly (32) . In writing his first dictionary, Webster was preparing for something grander. He had become familiar (33) many different languages. He felt it was helpful and important to know where words came from their (34) . He traveled in England and France (35) research on the histories of English words. In 1807 he began to work on An American Dictionary of the English Language. Webster was seventy years old when he published the first (36) of this important work in 1828. Webster wrote the dictionary completely (37) hand. In those days people didn't have ballpoint pens, much (38) typewriters. He had to use a quill pen, which was a feather with its thickest end (39) into a point. This point was dipped in a bottle of ink in order to write. A writer using a quill pen had to dip the pen constantly to (40) the ink.

单选题The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem. As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today's relatively high standard of living, about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living. Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs. For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people are children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old, the normal retirement age. Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons, they are sick, they do not have any motivation, they have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job. Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer. At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways. First, if the national economy grows, businesses and industries hire more workers. Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment. Then they will no longer be below the poverty line. Second, if society invests in the poor, the poor will become more productive. If the government spends money on social programs, education, and training for poor people, the poor will have the skills to offer. Then it is more likely that they can find jobs. Finally, if the government distributes society's income differently, it raises some poor people above the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare. In 1975 over 18 million people in the United States received welfare. Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living.

单选题Recent research had claimed that an excess of positive ions (离子) in the air can have an illeffect on people"s physical or psychological health. What are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative charges. But sometimes this balance becomes disturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are found. This happens naturally before thunderstorms, earthquakes or when winds are blowing in certain countries. Or it can be caused by a build-up of static electricity indoors from carpets or clothing made of man-made fibers, or from TV sets, duplicators or computer display screens. When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects such as headaches, fatigue, irritability, and some particularly sensitive people suffer nausea (恶心) or even mental disturbance. Animals are also found to be affected, particularly before earthquakes; snakes have been observed to come out of hibernation (冬眠), rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountably. This has led the U.S. Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in all effort to foresee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California. Conversely, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-being. Natural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to waterfalls or fountains, or in any place where water is sprayed, or forms a spray. This probably accounts for the beneficial effect of a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with tumbling streams or waterfalls. To increase the supply of negative ions indoors, some scientists recommend the use of ionizers: small portable machines which generate negative ions. They claim that ionizers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to excess positive ions. Of course, there are the detractors, other scientists, who dismiss such claims and are skeptical about negative/positive ion research. Therefore people can only make up their own minds by observing the effects on themselves, or on others, of a negative rich or poor environment. After all, it is debatable whether depending on seismic readings to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat.
