问答题Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese.{{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}One of the good things for men in women's liberation is that men no longer have to pay women the old-fashioned courtesies.{{/U}} In an article on the new manners, Ms. Holmes says that a perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public as if she were a model. {{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}For example, she doesn't need help getting in and out of cars. "Women get in and out of cars twenty times a day with babies and dogs. Surely they can get out by themselves at night just as easily."{{/U}} She also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk. "Historically, the man walked on the inside so he caught the garbage thrown out of a window. Today a man is supposed to walk on the outside. A man should walk where he wants to. So should a woman. {{U}} {{U}} 3 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}If, out of love and respect, he actually wants to take the blows, he should walk on the inside—because that's where attackers are all hiding these days."{{/U}} As far as manners are concerned, I suppose I have always been a supporter of women's liberation. Over the years, out of a sense of respect, I imagine, I have refused to trouble women with outdated courtesies. {{U}} {{U}} 4 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}It is usually easier to follow rules of social behaviour than to depend on one's own taste.{{/U}} But rules may be safely broken, of course, by those of us with the gift of natural grace. For example, when a man and woman are led to their table in a restaurant and the waiter pulls out a chair, the woman is expected to sit in the chair. That is according to Ms. Ann Clark. I have always done it the other way, according to my wife. It came up only the other night. I followed the hostess to the table, and when she pulled the chair out I sat on it, quite naturally, since it happened to be the chair I wanted to sit in. "Well," my wife said, when the hostess had gone, "you did it again." "Did what?" I asked, utterly confused. "Took the chair." Actually, since I'd walked through the restaurant ahead of my wife, it would have been awkward, I should think, not to have taken the chair. I had got there first, after all. Also, it has always been my custom to get in a car first, and let the woman get in by herself. {{U}} {{U}} 5 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}This is a courtesy I insist on as the stronger sex, out of love and respect. In times like these, there might be attackers hidden about. It would be unsuitable to put a woman in a car and then shut the door on her, leaving her at the mercy of some bad fellow who might be hiding in the back seat.{{/U}}

问答题It is not easy to talk about the role of the mass media in this overwhelmingly significant phase in European history. History and news become confused, and one's impressions tend to be a mixture of skepticism and optimism. (61)Television is one of the means by which these feelings are created and conveyed-and perhaps never before has it served so much to connect different peoples and nations as in the recent events in Europe. The Europe that is now forming cannot be anything other than its peoples, their cultures and national identities. With this in mind we can begin to analyze the European television scene. (62)In Europe, as elsewhere, multi-media groups have been increasingly successful: groups which bring together television, radio, newspapers, magazines and publishing houses that work in relation to one another. One Italian example would be the Berlusconi group, while abroad Maxwell and Murdoch come to mind. Clearly, only the biggest and most flexible television companies are going to be able to compete in such a rich and hotly-contested market. (63)This alone demonstrates that the television business is not an easy world to survive in, a fact underlined by statistics that show that out of eighty European television networks, no less than 50M took a loss in 1989. Moreover, the integration of the European community will oblige television companies to cooperate more closely in terms of both production and distribution. (64)Creating a "European identity" that respects the different cultures and traditions which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent is no easy task and demands a strategic choice—that of producing programs in Europe for Europe. This entails reducing our dependence on the North American market, whose programs relate to experiences and cultural traditions which are different from our own. In order to achieve these objectives, we must concentrate more on co-productions, the exchange of news, documentary services and training. This also involves the agreements between European countries for the creation of a European bank for Television Production which, on the model of the European Investments Bank, will handle the finances necessary for production costs. (65)In dealing with a challenge on such a scale, it is no exaggeration to say "United we stand, divided we fall"—and if I had to choose a slogan it would be "Unity in our diversity." A unity of objectives that nonetheless respect the varied peculiarities of each country.

American beverage giant Coca-Cola is offering a hefty "environmental hardship allowance" to its China-based expatriate employees, as foreign companies struggle to attract and retain staff with many people scared off by chronic pollution. China"s hazardous air pollution, with just three out of 74 cities last year meeting minimum government standards, has become the key issue for foreign companies looking to post workers to cities such as Beijing or Shanghai. Many companies offer better medical insurance benefits, more paid trips home and subsidies for air filters to the roughly half a million foreigners working in China. Australian architectural firm Hassell provides its staff in China with face masks to travel to and from work. It also changes its air filters every week during periods of heavy pollution. "In Australia, you might do that every year," said Peter Duncan, Hassell"s managing director for Asia, who is based in Shanghai. Three decades of double-digit growth and lax regulation has taken its toll on China"s environment. According to environment ministry statistics only three cities out of 74 met government standards for pollution last year. In Beijing, more than half of the days in May failed to meet government standards for air quality, while Shanghai fared slightly better with 58 per cent of days in the commercial capital-considered satisfactory. The World Health Organisation said earlier this year that air pollution was responsible for the deaths of 3.7 million people under the age of 60 across the globe in 2012. Peter Arkell, managing director Asia for recruitment firm Swann Global, said the Coca-Cola allowance showed the company was having trouble retaining and attracting staff to China. "I hear more and more stories about executives not extending their contracts because they don"t think China is a good place to bring up a family," he said. "It (the environmental payment) is a way of addressing the air pollution issue but it does look like a pretty generous payment to me."

问答题61) The method of scientific investigation is nothing but the expression of the necessary mode of working of the human mind; it is simply the mode by which all phenomena are reasoned about and given precise and exact explanation. There is no more difference, but there is just the same kind of difference, between the mental operations of a man of science and those of an ordinary person, as there is between the operations and methods of a baker or of a butcher weighing out his goods in common scales, and the operations of a chemist in performing a difficult and complex analysis by means of his balance and finely graded weights. It is not that the scales in the one case, and the balance in the other, differ in the principles of their construction or manner of working; but that the latter is much finer apparatus and of course much more accurate in its measurement than the former. You will understand this better, perhaps, if I give you some familiar examples. 62) You have all heard it that men of science work by means of induction and deduction, that with the help of these operations, they, in a sort of sense, manage to extract from Nature certain natural laws, and that out of these, by some special skill of their own, they build up their theories. 63) And it is imagined by many that the operations of the common mind can be by no means compared with these processes, and that they have to be acquired by a sort of special training. To hear all these large words, you would think that the mind of a man of science must be constituted differently from that of his fellow men, but if you will not be frightened by terms, you will discover that you are quite wrong, and that all these terrible apparatus are being used by yourselves every day and every hour of your lives. 64) There is a well-known incident in one of Moliere's plays, where the author makes the hero express unbounded delight on being told that he had been talking prose during the whole of his life. 65) In the same way, I trust that you will take comfort, and be delighted with yourselves, on the discovery that you have been acting on the principles of inductive and deductive philosophy during the same period. Probably there is not one here who has not in the course of the day had occasion to set in motion a complex train of reasoning, of the very same kind, though differing in degree, as that which a scientific man goes through in tracing the causes of natural phenomena.

问答题 61. {{U}}What is the relation between the code and culture which creates it, and which it transmits to the next generation?{{/U}} Linguists in the anthropological tradition had tried to establish links with meanings expressed lexically: Eskimo words for "snow", Arabic words for "camel and so on". Yet vocabulary only "reflects" culture by courtesy of its internal organization as a whole; and the assertion that because "camels" are important to the Arabs, therefore they have a lot of different words for "them" is a statement as much about English as about Arabic. 62. {{U}}Presumably nothing is more important than rice to the Chinese; yet Chinese has a single word for rice--and it means various other things besides.{{/U}} Chinese happens to be a language of type that favors general nouns. 63. {{U}}As the essential medium for people to organize and convey their ideas, language is no longer what it seemed to be for the traditional linguists who used to think of language as simple formal codes.{{/U}} It is also closely related to the context, social or anthropological, in which the communication takes place. 64. {{U}}Today most linguists come to realize that language is an important component of culture. It determines not only the form in which ideas are transmitted, but also the method with which the content of the ideas are organized.{{/U}} In this perspective, language is also a communicative base on which members of a speech community form their ideas in a way that is readily comprehensible to other members of that community. It is also regarded as part of culture that is related to other fields of humanity studies. But what is merely comic when applied to lexis becomes seriously misleading when applied to grammar. As Whorl pointed 50 years ago, it is naive and dangerous to take isolated grammatical phenomena and try to relate them to features of a culture. When linguists recognized this, their response was to avoid the language/culture issue altogether, thus closing the door on an important area of research. 65. {{U}}That there is a relationship between a code and the culture that engenders it is beyond question; but it is an extremely complex and abstract one.{{/U}}

问答题10 Things to Watch Out When Starting to Invest Calculate your worth: Make a note of all your assets, no matter how insignificant they seem. That way, you can work out what sort of investment suits you and over what time frame. Don"t spend more than you earn: If you live in debt, there is no point considering investing in stocks. 1 Paying hefty credit-card charges each month you will eat away any investment returns you may earn. Know your risk levels: Think carefully about your future plans and where you would like to be in a few years" time. 2 Consider the objective behind your decision to invest: are you aiming to retire in a decade, or are you saving for a deposit on a house? Your age and circumstances, as well as economic conditions, will determine the fight investment for you. Have a nest egg: Keep at least three months" wages available in cash before considering any other investment. That way, you will not lose out by having to liquidate a poorly-performing asset at an unfavourable time. Learn the basics: Find out about various asset classes and their characteristics. The market for property may appear favourable for first-time home buyers, but a house is an illiquid investment. Equities are relatively volatile, but can be liquidated quickly. Dollar-cost average: First-time investors have a lot to learn. 3 By contributing a small amount to a saving plan each month, you avoid having to decide when the time is right to buy—a skill even most mature investors fail to get right. Regular contributions take the emotion out of investing. Take advice: Avoid following the herd and buying into the latest fashionable initial public offering. News takes a long time to filter down to the guy in the street and chances are that any hot tip is past its sell-by date. 4 Spend some time with a financial adviser, read the papers or books on investing. That way, you can make educated decisions. Build a core position: Create a core investment portfolio in something solid such as blue-chip stocks that will bring in steady gains over the years. Diversify: Once you have a core position, look around for satellite investment that may slice up your portfolio. 5 Do not only buy equities, consider bonds, property or collectibles to protect yourself against poor performance in one asset class. Hang in there: Stick to your plan, even if your investment seems to be floundering. New investments are often driven by emotion and react at the wrong times. Financial experts will tell you that timing the market is almost impossible, but time in the market will eventually pay off.
