(61) Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. (62) Handsome male executives were considered to have more integrity than plainer men: effort and ability, were thought to account for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to their ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executive were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives.(63) Interestingly. though the rise of the unattractive overnight success was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability, than was that of attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine than the less attractive ones. Thus,(64) an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female job. but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position an pears to lack the "masculine" qualities required. This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently." Says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political office. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. (65) The results showed that attractive male utterly defeated unattractively men. but the women who had been ranked, most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.

问答题61) In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of male superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. 62) In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than their parents did and to prepare mole fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the "battle of the sexes". If the process goes too far and man's role is not regarded as important as before -- and that has happened in some cases -- we are as badly off as before, only in reverse. We should reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of "Momism", but we don't want to change it into a "Neo-popism". What we need is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equality. 63) There are signs that psychologists and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit, nor all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman's place is at home. 64) We are beginning, however, to study a man's place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. 65) The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down roles, because each family member needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is relevant not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.
