Broadband technology is seen as the key to the new digital economy. In this rapidly changing world, media and technology information can be sent via phone calls and downloads like music, graphics, business information or films. The simpler the information, the smaller the package and the narrower the bandwidth needed to deliver it. Broadband is used for high speed Internet connections at a fixed monthly rate. It turns an existing telephone line into a high speed digital line capable of carrying data up to 40 times conventional modem speeds. Any download is available at the click of a mouse—there is no dial-up as there is with standard Internet Service Providers. For home owners and families there are many advantages. One of the most important is simultaneous(同时的)access to both telephone lines and the Internet. No queues and no delay. For businesses, broadband can improve customer relations and provide direct access to corporate e-mails and databases. Entire operations can go online.

When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do. For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he can't make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed that he failed: he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it. If you look at children, you'11 see great difference between what we call "bright" children and "not-bright" children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world: he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

Impatience has been around for a long time. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuck in traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past. Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. They suggest that "digital technology, from cellphones to emails to iPads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from this technology have in turn increased our desire for instant satisfaction in other aspects of our lives." Psychologist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that " we have become an immediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When that doesn' t happen, we tend to become increasingly frustrated and unsatisfied." Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people who send messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. Also, with e-mails, as with letter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider such formalities (客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instant messaging. Many people do not take the time to proofread what they put in writing. As a result, letters and e-mails contain numerous grammatical and spelling errors. The thirst for immediate results is not limited to the digital communications. People seem to be losing their ability to wait in other areas of life. For instance, do you ever find yourself talking too fast, eating too fast, driving too fast, or spending money too fast? The few moments it takes to wait for an elevator to come, for a traffic light to change, or for a computer to start may seem like too long a time.

Americans use the term " college students" to mean students either in colleges or universities. Not only that, Americans almost never say "going off to university" or "when I was in university." That sounds British. Instead, they say "going off to college" and "when I was in college." College, university: what's the difference? Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. They offer more programs and do more research. Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. M.I.T. says that 75 percent of freshmen come there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts. Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word "university" came from the Latin universitas, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose. "College" came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true. A college can also be a part of a university. For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University. Programs in higher learning can also be called schools, like a school of engineering or a medical school within university. You know, learning all these terms is an education in itself.
