As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary (周年纪念), President Barack Obama has announced the establishment of one new national monument, and the expansion(扩大) of another. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 will expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size. Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation' s land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (78) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists(自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own. The land's new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (79) It may also severely limit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine' s politicians who want to protect the state's logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people's jobs are at stake. Maine politician Susan Collins said the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as to the U. S. Congress before making his decision. However, those who support the president's decision say the establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs through tourism.

In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a "weight problem". To many people, the cause is obvious: they eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of the 1910s, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less and didn't watch television. Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as the study of 3, 545 London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people. Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts: The more the men ran, the more body fat they lost. The more they ran, the greater amount of food they ate. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

Every chance she gets, five-year-old Gina visits Grandma Lilly. Gina likes to talk with her grandma and watch her cook. Everything Grandma Lilly makes is delicious, but Gina especially loves the little cookies shaped like teddy bears, dolls, flowers, and hearts. And Grandma Lilly, who enjoys this precious time with her granddaughter, uses the cookies to teach Gina certain things she will need to know as she grows up by helping her to develop the five senses and her imagination. Perhaps the most important lesson Grandma Lilly teaches Gina is that most of the foods and the cookies she prepares taste so delicious because they are made with love. One day Gina's mother tells her she cannot visit Grandma Lilly because she has become very sick and is in the hospital. Gina begs and cries, but her mother explains that Grandma Lilly is so ill that she is in a very deep sleep and needs her rest. Gina tries to think of something that will help her grandmother and suddenly remembers the cookies. She will bake a batch of them all by herself, and because she will make them with all the love she has in her heart, Grandma Lilly will feel better! Touched by her daughter's love and determination, Gina's mother finally agrees to take her to the hospital with her cookies to visit her grandmother. There, Grandma Lilly teaches her little granddaughter another lesson about love that she will be able to pass on to her own children and grandchildren in the years to come.

How much do you know about nutrition? If your knowledge is similar to that of food shoppers who answered three surveys for the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, then you probably share some wide-spread misinformation about nutrition. Check your answers to the following statements. Is it true or false? Statement 1: Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned or frozen vegetables. False. The nutritional difference depends more on how vegetables are handled or prepared than in whether they are bought fresh or packaged. Overcooking, for example, destroys many nutrients. Vegetables cooked in Loo much water can lose a significant amount of vitamins. Statement 2: When dieting, avoid starchy(淀粉类)foods, such as bread or potatoes. False. If you cut out starchy foods, such as peas, potatoes, bread, and rice, you cut out very good sources of several B vitamins, Vitamin C, and other nutrients. Moreover, bread and potatoes have fewer calories than sirloin steak and roast beef. Statement 3: Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won' t give you more energy. True. It's widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more than the body needs doesn't make it function better, just as overfilling your gas tank doesn't make your car run faster. If you answered these questions correctly, you can for the time being consider yourself well informed about food and nutrition by today's standards. But remember that nutrition is a complex and growing science and that today's beliefs may be changed as new information becomes available.
