Most people do not equate wealth with a big house or yacht(游艇). In fact, only 7% of people surveyed associate wealth with material possessions like cars, houses and boats. Rather, to many, being rich means having just enough not to worry about the next payday— that' s according to 33% of those questioned. An additional 26% define being wealthy, or rich, as having more than enough money to quit their jobs. Still, few people place an actual dollar amount on what it means to be wealthy. About 17% felt that being rich means having at least $ 1 million or more, and 11% stated a six-figure yearly income would make them feel rich. Yet most people who are rich don' t even consider themselves rich.

Over the years, college students have stood together for what they believe in, from civil rights to anti-war policies to the more recent protests against the unequal distribution of wealth. But nowhere in history have students banned(禁止) bottled water. Until now. The bottled water ban, which started on just a few campuses, has now spread nationwide to more than 20 universities. The colleges have either completely banned the use of plastic bottles altogether, or some have taken a more limited approach with partial bans. Many people believe that producing and using bottled water wastes money and harms the environment. They say that bottled water is unnecessary because public water supplies in the U. S. are among the best in the world. Water fountains and reusable bottles with easy access (获取) to filling stations are a better choice. An organization called Ban the Bottle raises awareness about the economic and environmental costs of using plastic bottles. The group claims that eight glasses of water a day costs each person 49 cents annually, while drinking from plastic containers costs $ 1,400 per year. Plastic bottles contain antimony—a chemical that in low doses causes depression, but in large doses can even lead to death. The controversy over bottled or tap is not limited to the students and college administrations.. The makers of bottled water see the movement as a threat. (80) They argue that plastic bottles make up a small portion of the nation's total waste. It' s unfair to single out(单独挑出) their product when so many other items are packaged in plastic containers. Plus, water is a healthy choice compared to some sodas and juices that are also sold at school.

Thanksgiving Day is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is the most traditional of American holidays. The first Thanksgiving was held in Massachusetts in 1621. After a year of great hardship, the Pilgrim colonists wanted to give thanks to God for their first harvest. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a big feast. Today the holiday is still celebrated as a day for giving thanks. It is a day of family reunion and it is customary to invite friends to share the meal. In some large cities, there are carnival parades for children. In other cities, there are important football games that are played on Thanksgiving Day. In my family, we always go to my grandmother's house on Thanksgiving Day. All my aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces gather for a family homecoming. We always invite some friends to join us. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a very busy exchange of gossip. The women soon disappear into the kitchen to help my grandmother prepare the dinner. The men, meanwhile, settle down to watch a football game on television or to discuss business or politics. If the weather permits, some of the more athletic men go outside to play ball with the children. At about four o'clock we all sit down to dinner. My grandfather gives thanks for the blessings we have received and then he starts to carve the turkey. We always have the traditional dinner of stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce, apple cider, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and pumpkin pie. After dinner, no one can move and we all sit around and talk, play word games, or tell jokes until it is time to go home. It is always difficult to leave because Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days of the year when the entire family gets together.

In the old days, when schools wanted to communicate with parents, they sent a letter home. Now, in addition to email, schools and parents can connect through social media like Twitter, Facebook and Skype. The Houston Independent School District in Texas has more than two hundred thousand students. Most of them come from lower-income families. Education Week recently reported on a digital literacy training program that the district has just started for parents. The school district with help from Microsoft has established computer training centers for parents at five of its campuses. Other schools around the country are also increasing their digital services and not just in English. Many schools provide information in Spanish and other languages. Free online translation sites can also help parents stay informed about their children' s education. Some school systems also give parents online access to their children' s grades and school work. Six hundred students attend Knapp Elementary School near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Principal Joe Mazza says almost one in five students come from Bangladesh and twelve percent from South Korea. The school diversity is clear as soon as visitors enter the building. " So if you are walking in our school lobby, you are going to see English, Bengali, Korean, Spanish and all of the Finnish in the school. Now we feel that a welcoming, bright, informative, child-centered lobby really helps parents feel welcomed, honored and respected."

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brash, and it lets you track your performance on your phone. The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don't forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you're brushing long enough. "It's kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis., " says Thomas Serval, the French inventor. The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. "We try to make it smart but also fun, " Several says. Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said "yes" , but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush mat really told him how well his children brushed. The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $ 199, developing on features. The U. S. is the first target market. Serval says that one day, it'll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
