单选题Movies are the most popular form of entertainment for millions of Americans. They go to the movies to escape, their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actors or because they have heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why people go to the movies is to escape. Sitting in a dark theater, watching the images on the screen, key enter another world that is real to them. They become involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things often appear to be more romantic (浪漫的) and beautiful than in real life. The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world. American movies are popular because they tell stories and they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can"t. People have to cope with many problems and much trouble in real life, so they feel encouraged when they see the "good guys" win in the movies.

单选题Life as a woman in the colonial (殖民的) America seems quite different from it is today. Women were considered inferior to men, a fact 1 in tradition, law, and religion. Their place was in the home, 2 they were to serve as devoted wives and mothers. They were therefore considered unfit to operate 3 political beings and unable to 4 the benefits of citizenship given to men. Very few women 5 a college education, secured a well-paid job, or pursued a fruitful career. Other than marrying well, they could do 6 to improve their economic status. 7 their secondary status, women 8 play a central role in developing, civilizing, and advancing the nation long before the United States gained its independence 9 Great Britain. During the colonial period, they made great contributions to family and community. They worked alongside their husbands 10 family survival demanded that chores (杂事) be shared by all. Women helped to sow, plant, and harvest crops. They 11 pigs and chickens, planted gardens and milked cows. This need for shared male and female labor 12 a constant theme (主题) as families moved to the frontier, where all family members having to work 13 essential. 14 scholars still debate the nature of white women"s standing during the colonial period, many of them admit that colonial women 15 some standing in their families and communities 16 their contributions were so essential. A woman might 17 chores in the home but also assist her husband in 18 a newspaper or a store. But this cooperative (合作的 ) approach did not translate into 19 rights for women; instead, it 20 the realities and uncertainties of colonial life.

单选题Much unfriendly feeling towards computers has been based on the fear of widespread unemployment resulting from their introduction. Computers are often used as part of automated(自动化的) production systems requiring a least possible number of operators, causing the loss of many jobs. This has happened, for example, in many steelworks. On the other hand, computers do create jobs. They are more skilled and better paid, though fewer in number than those they replace. Many activities could not continue in their present form without computers, no matter how many people are employed. Examples are the check clearing (交换) system of major banks and the weather forecasting system. When a firm introduces computers, a few people are usually employed in key posts (such as jobs of operations managers) while other staff are re-trained as operators, programmers, and data preparation staff~ After the new system has settled down, people in non-computer jobs are not always replaced when they leave, resulting in a decrease in the number of employees. This decrease is sometimes balanced by a substantial increase in the activity of the frim, resulting from the introduction of computers. The attitudes of workers towards computers vary. There is fear of widespread unemployment and of the takeover of many jobs by computer-trained workers, making promotion for older workers not skilled in computers more difficult. On the other hand, many workers regard the trend toward wider use of computers inevitable. They realize that computers bring about greater efficiency and productivity, which will improve the condition of the whole economy, and lead to the creation of more jobs. This view was supported by the former British Prime Minister, James Callaghan in 1979, when he made the point that new technologies hold the key to increased productivity, which will benefit the economy in the long run.
