问答题A "scientific" view of language was dominant among philosophers and linguists who affected to develop a scientific analysis of human thought and behavior in the early part of this century . Under the force of this view, it was perhaps inevitable that the art of rhetoric should pass from the status of being regarded as of questionable worth (because although it might be both a source of pleasure and a means to urge people to right action, it might also be a means to distort truth and a source of misguided action) to the status of being wholly condemned. 47) If people are regarded only as machines guided by logic as they were by these "scientific" thinkers, rhetoric is likely to be held in low regard, for the most obvious truth about rhetoric is that it speaks to the whole person . It presents its arguments first to the person as a rational being, because persuasive discourse, if honestly conceived, always has a basis in reasoning. Logical argument is the plot, as it were, of any speech or essay that is respectfully intended to persuade people. 48) Yet it is a characterizing feature of rhetoric that goes beyond this and appeals to the parts of our nature that are involved in feeling, desiring, acting, and suffering . It recalls relevant instances of the emotional reactions of people to circumstances -- real or fictional -- that are similar to our own circumstances . 49) Such is the purpose of both historical accounts and fables in persuasive discourse, they indicate literally or symbolically how people may react emotionally, with hope or fear, to particular circumstances . A speech attempting to persuade people can achieve little unless it takes into account the aspect of their being related to such hopes and fears. Rhetoric, then, is addressed to human beings living at particular times and in particular places. From the point of view of rhetoric, we are not merely logical thinking machines, creatures abstracted from time and space. The study of rhetoric should therefore be considered the most humanistic of the humanities, since rhetoric is not directed only to our rational selves. It takes into account what the "scientific" view leaves out. If it is weakness to harbor feelings, then rhetoric may be thought of as dealing in weakness. 50) But those who reject the idea of rhetoric because they believe it deals in lies and who at the same time hope to move people to action must either be liars themselves or be very naive . Pure logic has never been a motivating force unless it has been subordinated to human purposes, feelings, and desires, and thereby ceased to be pure logic.

问答题The Alchemist is a story of a man, Santiago, following his dream. This belief of dream is a marvelous one, a support for anyone embarking on a major project. Nevertheless, is it a hope based on nothing? If you think about the energy you put into something once you are committed to it, probably not. (46)The "universe contriving" to give you what you want is, more precisely, a reflection of your determination to make something happen. Dream followers have a greater responsibility, that of handling their own freedom. The old man that Santiago meets in the town square tells him not to believe "the biggest lie," that you can't control your destiny. You can, he says, but you must "read the omens," which becomes possible when you start to see the world as one. (47)The world can be read like a book, but we will never be able to understand it if we have a closed type of existence, contented with our lot and unwilling to risk anything. The Alchemist is also remarkable for being a love story that renounces the idea that romantic love must be the central thing in your life. The treasure that Santiago seeks is of course the symbol of the personal dream or destiny, but he is happy to give up on it when he finds the woman of his dreams in a desert oasis. Yet the alchemist he meets in the desert tells him that the love of his oasis girlfriend will only be proved real if she is willing to support his search for treasure. Santiago's dilemma is about the conflict between love and personal dreams. (48)Too often we see a love relationship as the meaning of our life, but the obsession with romantic coupling can cut us off from a life more connected with the rest of the world. But surely the heart has needs? Romantic love is important, but it is not your duty—that is to pursue your dream. (49)Only through devotion to the dream is the "soul of the world" revealed to us, the knowledge that destroys loneliness and gives power. (50)So much of the self-help literature is about pursuing our destiny, but dreams do not always pull us along by their own force; they speak persistently but quietly, and it does not take too much effort to mask the inner voices. Who is willing to risk comfort, routine, security, and existing relationships to follow something that to others looks like a mirage? It takes courage, and dog-eared, stained copy of The Alchemist have become the constant companion of people who need to make fearless decisions daily in order to keep true to a larger vision.

问答题An awkward-looking character such as Cyrano de Bergerac might sniff at the suggestion, but recent scientific research shows beauty, brains and brawn may in fact all be allied, writes Dr Raj Persaud. (46) Psychologists have concluded that we may be drawn to the stereotypically attractive because of what their faces reveal about their intelligence and success in later life. In American, research led by Professor Leslie Zebrowitz, of Brandeis University, has shown an association between facial attractive and IQ. Strangers briefly exposed to a target's face were able to correctly judge intelligence at levels significantly better than chance. The same team also researched how a person's attractiveness might bear relation to their intelligence. They found that good-looking people did better in IQ tests as they aged. (47) Their research sought to prove that how a person perceived himself and was perceived by others predicted how intelligent he apparently became more accurately than his past intelligence. (48) Perhaps because the more attractive people were treated as more intelligent, they ended up having more stimulating and, therefore, intelligence-enhancing lives. Does this mean that your face really could be your destiny? Sociologists Dr Ulrich Mueller and Dr Allan Mazur, of the University of Marburg in Germany, recently analyzed the final-year photographs of the 1950 graduates of West Point in the United States. Dominant facial appearances turned out to be a consistent predictor of later-rank attainment. Again, they believed there could be a self-fulfilling effect. (49) Because some men looked more authoritative, they naturally drew respect and obedience from others which, in turn, assisted their rise through the ranks. A team at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin has been investigating the sensitive subject of links between physical and mental abnormalities. Led by Doctors Robin Hennessy and John Waddington, the team used a new laser surface-scanning technique to make a 3-D analysis of how facial shape might vary with brain structure. Their findings showed that in early fetal life, brain and face development are intimately connected. From this they concluded that abnormalities in brain elaboration probably also affect face development. This, according to them, explains the striking facial features of some one with Down's syndrome. (50) Using similar techniques, the team also demonstrated how other disorders linked to brain aberrations could be associated with facial alterations. So the very latest scientific research suggests that nobody should try to look too obviously different from average.

问答题 Enzo Ferrari is not well known outside Italy. (46){{U}}Evan as his cars were racing to victory all over the world, the man at the helm of the racing team preferred to stay in Modena and watch the races on television at home{{/U}}. This intimate account of Ferrari's early days and his emergence as the spirit behind the team fills the gap neatly. Ferrari. now owned by Fiat, has long been synonymous with Formula One racing. (47){{U}}Over the years, McLaren, Benetton and Williams may between them have won more races, but it is the glamour as well as the singular success of Ferrari that draws the crowds{{/U}}. As a young man Ferrari had neither the money nor the killer instinct to become one of the great racing drivers. "If you want spectacular results, you have to know how to treat your car badly. The fact is I don't drive just to get from A to B. I enjoy feeling the car's reactions, becoming part of it. I couldn't inflict suffering on it." What Ferrari liked was to be "an agitator of men". The first Ferrari team raced Alfa Romeos, though the partnership did not last. (48){{U}}In 1947 Ferrari relaunched on his own, making the first of the cars that would wear the badge of the black prancing horse on a yellow background{{/U}}. By the early 1950s, in the hands of such drivers as Alberto Ascari and Juan Fangio, Ferraris were leading the world championships. Meanwhile, Luigi Chinetti, a great salesman, persuaded Ferrari that road versions of the cars would sell well to rich Americans. In Italy road Ferraris became the film star's must-have car in Cinecitta. (49){{U}}Roberto Rossellini even got to drive one in the famous Mille Miglia before his wife, Ingrid Bergman, persuaded him to abandon the race halfway through in Rome{{/U}}. (50){{U}}The accounts of early races, such as the Mille Miglia from Brescia to Rome and back and Tazio Nuvolari's win in a Ferrari-run Alfa Romeo at Nurburgring in Germany in 1935, are among the highlights of Richard Williams's book{{/U}}. As the Italian crossed the winning line, Hitler's sports minister ground his teeth and crumpled his prepared speech lauding a Mercedes victory. Mr Williams is a talented writer; he loves Italy and motor racing, and his passion for both shines through.
