单选题 The Brooklyn Bridge in New York has been featured in movies, photographs, and media for over a hundred years, but the bridge is much more than just a pretty sight. It opened on May 24, 1883, and, at 3,460 feet, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, measuring 50% longer than any previously built. The Brooklyn Bridge was a symbol of American strength and vitality, but its completion followed years of toil and sacrifice. John Augustus Roebling, a German immigrant, envisioned the bridge that would link Manhattan to Brooklyn over the East River. While in preparations for building, however, John Roebling was injured when a ferry pinned his foot to a pylon, and he died weeks later of tetanus. This first setback to the building of the bridge was indicative of the problems that would plague its construction as well as the harrowing tenacity that led to its completion. Washington Roebling took over the project upon his father's death. Washington persevered through many hurdles in the building of the bridge including fires, accidents, industrial corruption, and loss of public support. He continued, however, in his push to complete the bridge. In fact, it is said that he worked harder and longer than any worker he employed in even the most dangerous circumstances. While working in the caissons, underwater chambers that supported the bridge, he was stricken by the decompression sickness that led to his paralysis. Nothing could stop him, though, and he continued construction by sending messages to the site through his wife, Emily. Fourteen years after construction began, the Brooklyn Bridge celebrated its grand opening. The total cost to build the bridge was fifteen million dollars, and 27 people died in its construction, but it stood as a tribute to American invention and industry.

单选题 Of late, there have been several posts suggesting that America has no culture or that what culture it has is somehow inferior to that of other societies. Of course, it cannot be both. To suggest that America has, in some sense, an inferior culture is to grant that it has a culture. America most definitely has culture and the culture of America is easily the most dominant of the world, whether it is McDonald's in the heart of what as once the center of the Evil Empire, or Arnold Schwarzenagger storming across German theatres, or Disneyland sending the French snobs into hysteria, American culture dominates Europe as never before. And it is not just Europe. Enter any shopping center in Asia and the odds are that the music blasting over the sound system is American pop music. Madonna look like speak Mandarin Chinese. Often, American culture is derided by the so-called "intellectuals". (And by that , I do not mean the traditional definition of those who use their intellect to make a living as, ina increasingly service economy, there are few people today who would not fit into that category but, rather, people who fancy themselves as in some way gifted to impose their views upon the rest of us, to save us from ourselves. ) What is it about American culture that annoys the "intellectuals" so much? It is precisely that which differentiates it from other cultures, particularly the cultures of Europe("intellectuals " tending to be Europhiles). Whereas European culture (and, indeed, most pre-industrial cultures ) sprang from their traditions of aristocracy and the subservience of the ruling class, American culture serves the middle-class, the vulgar, if you will. Where-as European culture is concerned with what is exclusive and aloof, American culture is concerned with what is common and accessible. You don't need classes in school in rock music appreciation or the finer aspects of eating pizza. Some have suggested that America is doomed because it has no culture. But the contrary is more likely the case. In spite of the best efforts of the multi cultural fascists,America has yet to fulfill its manifest destiny primarily because its culture is not only dominating and assimilating immigrants from every corner of the world, it is, indeed reaching out to every corner of the world and creating a world community, a community centered on the individual, every individual not just those gifted with expensive tastes.

单选题{{B}}Directions:{{/B}} There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. Far each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with your pencil.{{B}}Passage One{{/B}} In the simplest terms, a market is the place where seller meets buyer to exchange products for money. Traditional markets still function in many parts of the world. Even in the United Sales, during summer months there are farmers' markets where direct selling and buying take place between producers and consumers. Most service industries still operate at this market level. Manufacturing industries and most agricultural enterprises are more distant from the consumer. Their products pass through several hands—truckers, warehouse wholesalers, and retailers before reaching the final consumer. Products, or commodities are usually divided into two types: consumer and industrial. Consumer goods are those that are sold to final users, the customers. These goods include food, clothing, automobiles, television sets, appliances, and all those things people go to stores to purchase. Industrial goods are those that are sold to companies or other businesses for use in manufacturing or other purposes. Automobile makers buy many of the parts used to assemble cars. A tire manufacturer buys rubber, synthetic or otherwise, with which to make tires. Eventually these materials will end up in the hands of final users: the owners of the cars. The nature of industrial goods depends on the nature of the goods to be made for final users. The price of industrial goods and raw materials will influence the price of final goods, those that the consumer buys.

单选题The UK government has some way to go in building trust in its handling of genetic modification in agriculture. Lessons learnt in Britain ( and no doubt elsewhere ) from the BSE (疯牛病) crisis were evident in the UK government's announcements last week of plans to change the way it regulates genetically modified crops. Out goes any lingering assumption that the technology is inherently safe, and in comes a new requirement for industry to demonstrate practically that its products will not have adverse ecological effects. In a welcome move, a new steering group of scientists will be able to commission research it considers necessary on the ecological impacts of genetically modified crops. The government, in turn, promises not to allow the commercialization of any crop until the scientists are reasonably satisfied that it is safe to proceed. The government's attempts to build public trust in its scientific advice, and to include public views in its policy decisions, however, leave some questions open. It has chosen to set up a new forum of 'environmental stakeholders' whose view would contribute to decisions about genetic modification in agriculture. This forum, spanning the spectrum of interests and opinion, will need to make constructive suggestions, and avoid well-trodden, predictable and ultimately time wasting disputes between industry and environmentalism. The government is already poised to embark on a survey of the public--as opposed to environmentalist--perception of the biosciences. Ministers would be wise to wait for its outcome before putting more flesh on the stakeholders' forum. But the latter should eventually be encouraged to make constructive contributions to the research agenda. In doing so, it will not only address public concerns about the risks of genetically modified crops, but should also help rebuild public trust in the application of science to foods. Here again, however, the government will need to ensure that the chance to influence research is not used as an unyielding instrument of obstruction by fundamentalist opponents of genetic modification. Scientists on the whole are supportive of the changes, particularly the decision to authorize research trials on a commercial scale. They rightly seek better security arrangements following recent incidents of crop destruction. They should cautiously welcome, rather than oppose, increased public awareness and scrutiny of their activities while being themselves watchful over the details of the processes the government is putting in place.
