单选题G8 Summit
Leaders of the Group of Eight Major Industrialized Nations (G8) will meet in Scotland in July this year. Representatives from China, India, Mexico, South Africa and Brazil have also been invited. Here"s what the G8 leaders want from the meeting.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair wants the G8 to cancel debt to the world"s poorest countries. He wants them to double aid to Africa to 50 billion pounds by 2010. He has also proposed reducing subsidies to Western farmers and removing restrictions on African exports. This has not got the approval of all members because it will hurt their agricultural interests. On climate change, Blair wants concerted (共同的) action by reducing carbon emissions (排放).
US President George W. Bush agrees to give help to Africa. But he says he doesn"t like the idea of increasing aid to countries as it will increase corruption. Bush said he would not sign an agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions at the summit, according to media. The US is the only G8 member not to have signed the Kyoto Protocol (京都协议书). Although the US is the world"s biggest polluter, Bush so far refuses to believe there is sufficient scientific data to establish beyond a doubt that there is a problem.
French President Jacques Chirac supports Blair on Africa and climate change. He is determined to get the US to sign the climate change deal.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder remains doubtful of Blair"s Africa proposals. Schroder"s officials have dismissed the notion that money will solve Africa"s problems as "old thinking". Berlin says that African states should only receive extra money if they can prove they"ve solved the corruption problem.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was doubtful about the value of more aid to Africa. But he has seen a way to make this work to his advantage. Putin intends to use the aid to Africa as a springboard (跳板) next year to propose aid to the former Soviet republics of Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Moldova.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi"s priorities are a seat on the UN Security Council, for which he will be lobbying (游说) at the summit. And he"s concerned about the Democratic People"s Republic of Korea"s nuclear weapons programme.
单选题Immigration and Problems Hundreds of thousands of people supporting immigration fights in the U.S. filled streets all over America in early 2006. Many held signs and American flags and asked to be treated as citizens not criminals. Many of these supported legislation from Senator John McCain that would open a path to citizenship to immigrants who were already in the country illegally. Proposed legislation from other politicians called for stricter measures, including rounding up undocumented immigrants and sending them back to their home countries. Canadian officials say that immigration applications continue to rise. Some want to keep the doors open. They need the labor. About 400,000 immigrants were allowed into the country in 2005, according to the Canadian Government statistics. However, all this growth means that cities need to adapt. Newcomers don't always make a smooth transition into jobs for which they are skilled. So industries are using mentoring programs to help new immigrants find proper jobs. With the large numbers of undocumented African immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands and showing no sign of abating, the Spanish Government has decided to get tough. There will be no more mass amnesties for illegals, and anyone coming to Spain without permission will be sent back, the government has announced. About 23,000 migrants landed on the islands in 2006, and riots have erupted in some crowded reception centers. This has promoted local authorities to appeal to the United Nations for help. France's new immigration and integration law gives the government new powers to encourage high-skilled migration. It takes effect in 2007. The new law authorizes the government to identify particular professions where France has a talent shortage. Then the government will help these identified employers find immigrant workers with needed skills or qualifications. The selected foreign employees will be granted "skills and talents" visas, valid for three years. But some concern that it'll cause brain drain in developing countries.
单选题Can Added Calcium Help Older Bones?
New Zealand researchers say guidelines advising seniors to consume at least 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day are misplaced.
No proof was found that boosting calcium intake beyond normal dietary levels strengthens older bones or prevents fractures, said researcher Dr Mark Bolland, a professor at the University of Auckland. "We"ve gathered all the clinical studies of calcium supplements and dietary calcium intake for both bone density and fractures," said Bolland. "Taken together, we think this is the strongest possible evidence that taking calcium supplements will not be beneficial unless there are, clear medical reasons that a calcium supplement is needed," he said.
Moreover, excess calcium supplementation can be harmful, he and other experts said. "The findings probably will surprise clinicians and patients", Bolland said," because they have received very strong messages for many years about the importance of calcium for bone health in guidelines for osteoporosis (骨质疏松症) management and by osteoporosis advocacy groups."
"Clinical trials have shown that calcium supplements often cause minor gastrointestinal (胃肠的) side effects such as constipation (便秘)", Bolland said. "They also cause a small increased risk of kidney stones, heart attacks, high calcium levels and hospitalization with acute gastrointestinal symptoms." He also said. "The small risk of these important adverse effects, together with the moderate risk of minor side effects such as constipation, outweighs any benefits of calcium supplements on fracture."
However, Dr Duffy MacKay, president for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, disagreed with Bolland"s conclusions, and countered that scientific evidence does show that calcium reduces fracture risk. "The degree of benefit varies from study to study," he said. "However, the largest benefit is generally found in those who take their calcium supplements throughout the entirety of a study. Other important factors that influence the benefit of calcium supplementation include giving calcium supplements with other important bone nutrients including vitamin D and vitamin K."

单选题Preserve the Environment
Throughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life.
With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed woodlands into farmland, and made lakes and reservoirs out of rivers for irrigation purposes or hydroelectric power. Man has also modified the face of the earth by draining marshes and cutting through mountains to build roads and railways.
However, man"s changes to the physical environment have not always had beneficial results. Today, pollution of the air and water is an increasing danger to the health of the planet. Each day thousands of tons of gases come out of the exhausts of motor vehicles; smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrounding areas of countryside. The air in cities is becoming increasingly unhealthy.
The pollution of water is equally harmful. In the sea, pollution from oil is increasing and is killing enormous numbers of algae(水藻), fish and birds. The whole ecological balance of the sea is being changed. The same problem exists in rivers. Industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless.
Conservationists believe that it is now necessary for man to limit the growth of technology in order to survive on earth.

{{B}}Saving
Money{{/B}} Where you save your money often depends on what you
are saving for. If you are saving to buy a CD (光盘) or to go to a concert, then
probably you would keep your money somewhere in your room. If
you are saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike or a school trip, where
would you save your money? One place to save money is the bank.
Putting your money in a savings account will help your money earn more money. If
you put your money in a piggy bank (猪形储蓄罐), one year later you'll still have the
same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one
year later, you'll have more money than you put in. Why? When
you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is an amount
of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money (and the
money of other people, too) to loan money to people and businesses.
The bank will send you a statement several times a year. A bank statement
tells you how much money you have in your account. It also tells you how much
interest you have earned. If you leave your money in the bank, you can watch it
grow! Another way you can save money is to buy a certificate of
deposit or CD. If you have some money that you don't need to use for a long
time, this is a good way to make your money grow. You can buy a
CD at a bank. You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time. That
period might be from six months to five years. You can't touch your money during
that time. If you do, you must pay a penalty, or
fee.

单选题Advertisement
Advertisement can be thought of "as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services ". Advertisement aims to increase people"s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement.
There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement.
We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertisement. However, if large scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.
It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.
