单选题Flu does Scratchy throats, stuffy noses and body aches all spell misery, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu may make a difference in how long the misery lasts. The American Lung Association (ALA) has issued new guidelines on combating colds and the flu, and one of the keys is being able to quickly tell the two apart. That's because the prescription drugs available for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness sets in. As for colds, the sooner a person starts taking over-the-counter remedy, the sooner relief will come. The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms, while the flu is caused by three viruses-flu A, B and C. There is no cure for either illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine (疫苗), which is, for most people, the best way to fight the flu, according to the ALA. But if the flu does strike, quick action can help. Although the flu and common cold have many similarities, there are some obvious signs to look for. Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, runny nose and scratchy throat typically develop gradually, and adults and teens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of the characteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptoms including fever and chills, sore throat and body aches come on suddenly and are more severe than cold symptoms. The ALA notes that it may be particularly difficult to tell when infants and preschool age children have the flu. It advises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms. Both cold and flu symptoms can be eased with over-the-counter medications as well. However, children and teens with a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the risk of Reye syndrome (综合症), a rare but serious condition of the liver and central nervous system. There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold but frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce the likelihood of catching one.

Do Patients Trust Doctors Too
Much? Earlier this year, the American College of
Surgeons, the national scientific and educational organization of surgeons,
conducted a nationwide survey that found that the average patient devotes an
hour or less to researching his or her surgery or surgeon. While prospective
patients worry about the costs or complications of an operation, they don't
necessarily look for information that would address their concerns.
In fact, more than a third of patients who had an operation in the last
five years never reviewed the credentials of the surgeon who operated. Patients
are more likely to spend time researching a job change (on average, about 10
hours) or a new car (8 hours) than the operation they are about to submit to or
the surgeon who wields (支配) the knife. And many patients are satisfied with the
answers they receive from their surgeons or primary care doctors, whoever those
individuals happen to be. I felt curious about the survey, so
I called Dr. Thomas Russell, executive director of the American College of
Surgeons. "There is a tendency for patients not to get particularly involved and
not to feel compelled to look into their surgery or surgeons," he told me.
There are consequences to that kind of blind trust.
"Today, medicine and surgery are really team sports," Dr. Russell continued,
"and the patient, as the ultimate decision maker, is the most important member
of the team. Mistakes can happen, and patients have to be educated and must
understand what is going on. " In other words, a healthy
doctor-patient relationship does not simply entail good bedside manners and
responsible office management on the part of the doctor. It also requires that
patients come to the relationship educated about their doctors, their illnesses
and their treatment. "If we are truly going to reform
the health care system in the U. S. ," Dr. Russell said, "everybody has to
participate actively and must educate themselves. That means doctors, nurses,
other health care professionals, lawyers, pharmaceutical (制的) companies, and
insurance companies. But most of all, it means the patient. "
Trust is important. But as Sir Francis Bacon, who was among the first to
understand the importance of gathering data in science, once observed, knowledge
is power.

单选题Stomach Ulcer
Stomach ulcers are the cause of severe pain for many people. Doctors have been able to help lessen the pain of ulcers. They could not cure them. Now doctors have discovered a cause of ulcers. This means they may have found a way to cure people who suffer from the stomach pain. Studies show that ten percent of the population will develop an ulcer at some time in their life. So a possible cure is good news for many people.
Ulcers are wounds in the stomach that are similar to small cuts or tears. These wounds can harm the tissue in the stomach, the pipe that carries the food to the stomach or parts of the small intestines. Fluids in the stomach then increase the pain of an ulcer. How does a person know he or she has an ulcer? Doctors say most people with ulcers feel a burning pain in their chest or stomach. This pain often is called heart burn. It usually happens before eating or during the night. It causes some people to lose their desire to eat, or they are unable to keep food in their stomachs. Doctors believed that ulcers were caused by unusually strong stomach fluids, which damaged stomach tissue. Now they have discovered that most ulcers are caused by a bacterial organism called Hillico Bactor Pilorie or HPillorie. HPillorie bacteria are what make stomach produce extra stomach fluid. Doctors found that they can kill the bacteria with medicines called antibiotics. Health experts say the discovery of a cure for ulcers can save thousands of millions of dollars in medical costs. They also believe curing ulcers will reduce the number of people who develop stomach cancer. The number of people with stomach cancer is very high in Japan, Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.
Doctors say a person is more likely to get an ulcer if his or her family has had one. In fact a person with the family history of ulcers is three times more likely to get one than other people. There are ways people can protect themselves from developing an ulcer. Doctors say it is more important to reduce the amount of strong fluids in the stomach. To do this, doctors say, people should not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. And they say people should reduce tension in their lives.

单选题U.S. Blacks Hard-hit by Cancer Death rates for cancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more likely to die of cancer than whites, the American Cancer Society said Monday. In a special report on cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually diagnosed with cancer later than whites, and they are more likely to die of the disease. This could be because of unequal (不平等的) access to medical care, because blacks are more likely to have other diseases as well, and perhaps because of differences in the biology (生物学) of the cancer itself, the report added. "In general, black Americans have less hope of surviving five years after diagnosis than whites for all cancer sites and all stages of diagnosis," the report said. "In describing cancer statistics for black Americans, this report recognizes that many of the differences associated with race may be caused by unfair social and economic differences and unequal access to medical care." The cancer society said blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups (体格检查) earlier, when cancer is more treatable, and it said more research is needed to see if biological differences play a role. "The new statistics emphasize the continuing importance of wiping out these unfair social differences through public policy and education efforts," the organization said in a statement. But it also noted a drop in cancer death rates. "Cancer death rates in both sexes for all sites Combined have dropped greatly among black Americans since 1992, as have incidence rates (发生率)," said the report.

单选题Marriage Linked With Better Sleep Marriage may improve your sleep, and better sleep may improve your marriage, two new studies suggest. Women who are married or who have stable partners appear to sleep better than women who have never married or lost a panner, according to research from an eight - year study presented at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting. They also found that marital (婚姻的)happiness lowers the risk of sleep problems, while marital conflict heightens the risk. Although married women overall slept more soundly than unmarried women, the researchers, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, did identify a "newlywed" effect. Women who were single at the start of the study but gained a partner had more restless sleep than women who were akeady married. The researchers speculated that newly married women were less adjusted to sleeping with their partner than those who had been married longer. The study included 360 middle - aged African--American, Caucasian and Chinese. American women who had taken part in the Study of Women' s Health Across the Nation. Researchers used in--home sleep studies, activity monitors to track sleep--wake patterns and relationship histories to look at the effect stable marriages, unstable marriages and marital transitions, such as a divorce, had on sleep. Another small study of 29 couples found that on a daily basis, the quality of a couple' s relationship and the quality of their sleep are closely linked. In that study, from the University of Arizona, 29 heterosexual (异性的) couples who shared a bed and did not have children completed sleep and relationship diaries for a week. The results showed that when men get better sleep, they are more likely to feel positive about their relationship the next day. And for women, problems in the relationship were Strongly associated with poor sleep for both themselves and their partner. "When we look at the data on a day - by - day basis, there seems to be a vicious cycle in which sleep affects next day relationship functioning, and relationship functioning affects the subsequent night's sleep," said principal investigator Brant Hasler, a clinical psychology doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona, in a press release. "In this cycle, conflict with one' s partner during the day leads to worse sleep that night, which leads to more conflict the following day. " The data from both studies suggest that sleep and relationship happiness are closely linked. The lesson for couples, especially those who are struggling with problems, is that paying attention to sleep habits may help solve other issues in the relationship.

The Poverty Line{{/B}} In
the United States during 1992, any family of four with an annual cash income of
less than $14,335(before taxes) was considered poor. The dollar amount was
called the poverty line, an economic measuring rod devised in 1964. the line was
set at three times the amount needed to provide the cheapest nutritionally
balanced diet. The poverty line is adjusted annually for inflation.
While the poverty line in the United States was more than $14,000, the
average annual per-person income in Bangladesh was $200, in Ethiopia average
annual per-person income in Bangladesh was $200, in Ethiopia $130, in Haiti
$340, and in Mall $265. Anyone in those nations with an income of $14,000
would be considered wealthy. During the Great Depression in the United States,
when half the population was considered poor, a family with an income at the
1992 poverty line could afford to buy a house, a car, clothing, and
food. The reality of poverty varies with location and social and
political conditions. Poverty basically means a lack of, or an insufficient
amount of, the three primary physical needs—food, clothing, and shelter. But for
poverty to be recognized, it must exist alongside prosperity. Before the
discovery of the New World, the American Indians would not have considered
themselves poor, though they lived with only the bare necessities and a few
handmade artifacts(人工制品). The severity of poverty varies,
depending on the economic vitality of the nation in which it occurs. In the
modern industrialized societies of the nation in which it occurs. In the modern
industrialized societies of Western Europe, North America, and Japan, there are
many government services provided to ease poverty—including free medical care
and subsidized housing. The homeless of New York City and Los Angeles can
usually find some shelter and a mission offering free
meals.
