{{B}}U.S. States Do Poorly in Women's Health{{/B}} Not
a single U.S. state meets basic federal goals for women's health, and the nation
as a whole fails except in two areas -- mammograms (乳腺X光照片) and dental (牙齿的)
check-ups -- researchers said on Thursday. Millions of women
lack health insurance, and states make it difficult to enroll (加入) in Medicaid,
the state-federal health insurance plan for the poor, according to the
report. And few states are doing anywhere near enough to help
women quit smoking -- the leading cause of death in the United States.
"The nation as a whole and the individual states fall short of meeting
national goals," reads the report, put together by the National Women's Law
Center and the Oregon Health & Science University. "These health goals
provide a road map for assessing the status of women's health."
Of 27 measures examined by the group, from screening for diseases to
actually treating them, the nation passes on only two, the researchers said.
"The nation is so far from the health goals that it receives an overall grade of
'unsatisfactory'," they wrote. The problem seems to be a lack
among states of an overall plan for health in general, the NWLC said.
"State policy makers' piecemeal (一件一件做的) approach to our health Care
crisis has resulted in a complex and ineffective system that fails to meet the
health care needs of women," Judy Waxman, NWLC Vice President for Health, said
in a statement. "Lawmakers need to take a comprehensive,
long-term approach to meeting women's health needs and tackle this serious
problem that troubles so many families."

Generation Gap{{/B}} A few years ago, it was
fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and
their elders. Parents complained that children did not show them proper respect
and obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand
them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared?
Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many critics argue
that it is built into the fabric of our society. One important
cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose
their own life-styles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up,
they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people
that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family
occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their
education, most out of the family home at an early age, marry or live or choose
occupations different from those of their parents. In our
upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than
they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that
they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for
their children are another cause of the division between them. Often they
discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another
cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly
people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a
lifetime may become obsolete overnight. The young and the old
seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and
abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a
feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the
freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace at which
society changes.
单选题Why does cream go bad faster than butter? Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition--a finding that could help rid some processed foods of chemical preservatives. Cream and butter contain pretty much the same substances, so why cream should sour much faster has been a mystery. Both are emulsions--tiny globules(小球体)of one liquid evenly distributed throughout another. The difference lies in what's in the globules and what's in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the investigation. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery solution are locked away in a sea of fat. The bacteria which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery regions of the mixture. "This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture," he says. When the situation is reversed, the bacteria are locked away in compartments(隔仓室)buried deep in the sea of fat. Trapped in this way, individual colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out nutrients(养料). They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products. "In butter, you get a self--limiting system which stops the bacteria growing," says Broeklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies keen to see if their products can be made resistant to bacterial attack through alterations to the food's structure. Brocklehurst believes it will be possible to make the emulsions used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning in into a solid lump.

单选题Common-cold Sense You can't beat it, but you don't have to join it. Maybe it got the name "common cold" because it's more common in winter. The fact is, though, being cold doesn't have anything to do with getting one. Colds are caused by the spread of rhinoviruses, and, at least so far, medical science is better at telling you how to avoid getting one than how to get rid of one. Children are the most common way cold viruses are spread to adults, because they have more colds than adults-an average of about eight per year. Why do kids seem so much more easily to get colds than their parents? Simple. They haven't had the opportunity to become immune to many cold viruses. There are more than 150 different cold viruses, and you never have the same one twice. Being infected by one makes you immune to it-but only it. Colds are usually spread by direct contact, not sneezing or coughing. From another person's hand to your hand and then to your nose or eyes is the most common route. The highest concentration of cold viruses anywhere is found under the thumbnails of a boy, although the viruses can survive for hours on skin or other smooth surfaces. Hygiene is your best defense. Wash your hands frequently, preferably with a disinfectant soap, especially when children in your household have colds. But even careful hygiene won't ward off every cold. So, what works when a coughing, sneezing, runny nose strikes? The old prescription of two aspirins, lots of water, and bed rest is a good place to start. But you'll also find some of the folk remedies worth trying. Hot mixtures of sugar(or honey), lemon, and water have real benefits.

单选题Study Confirms Red Meat Link with Bowel (结肠) Cancer People who eat more than 160 grams of red or processed meat a day are 35 percent more likely to develop bowel cancer than those who eat less (51) 20 grams a day, according to one of the biggest nutrition investigations ever carried out. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition followed 478,040 men and women_ (52) 35 to 70 from 10 European countries. All subjects were free of cancer at enrollment between 1992 and 1998, but (53) an average follow-up of almost 5 years 1,329 bowel cancers had been reported. The subsequent analysis, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, confirms the long-held suspicion (54) high intakes (纳入量) of red meat are associated with increased bowel (55) risk. After taking into consideration factors like age, sex, height, weight, energy intake, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption, the investigators found that bowel cancer was (56) with intake of red and processed meat but not chicken. Risk of bowel cancer dropped with increasing intake of fish. Eating more than 80 grams a day of fish was associated (57) a 31 percent reduction in risk compared with eating less than 10 grams a (58) . Subjects with high red meat and low fish intake were at 63 percent higher risk of bowel cancer compared with subjects with low red meat and high fish (59) . In addition, the risk of developing the disease was increased for (60) people who ate a low fibre diet. Sheila Bingham, study investigator at the UK's Medical Research Council nutrition unit, said: "People have suspected for some time that high levels of red and processed meat (61) risk of bowel cancer, but this is one of the largest studies worldwide and the first from Europe of this type to show a (62) relationship." She added in a statement: "The overall picture is very consistent for red and processed meat and fibre across all the (63) populations studied." Study coordinator, Elio Riboli, of the World Health Organisation International Agency for Research into Cancer, said: "Other risk factors for (64) cancer include obesity (肥胖) and lack of physical activity. Smoking and excess alcohol may also play a (65) . These factors were all taken into account in the analysis./
