单选题Pushbike Peril Low speed bicycle crashes can badly injure — or even kill — children if they fall onto the ends of the handlebars. So a team of engineers is redesigning the humble handlebar in a bid to make it safer. Kristy Arbogast, a bioengineer at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, began the project with her colleagues after a study of serious abdominal injuries in children in the past 30 years showed that more than a third were caused by bicycle accidents. "The task was to identify how the injuries occurred and come up with some countermeasures," she says. By interviewing the children and their parents, Arbogast and her team were able tog reconstruct many of the accidents and identified a common mechanism responsible for serious injuries. They discovered that most occur when children hit an obstacle at a slow speed, causing them to topple over5. To maintain their balance they turn the handlebars through 90 degrees — but their momentum forces them into the end of the handlebars. The bike then falls over and the other end of the handlebars hits the ground, ramming it into their abdomen6. The solution the group came up with is a handgrip fitted with a spring and damping system. The spring absorbs up to 50 per cent of the forces transmitted through the handlebars in an impact. The group hopes to commercialize the device, which should add only a few dollars to the cost of a bike. "But our task has been one of education because up until now, bicycle manufacturers were unaware of the problem," says Arbogast. The team has also approached the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to try to persuade manufacturers to adopt the new design. A decision is expected later this year.

During this period many health agencies declared smoking to be a (53) Hazard. US Surgeon General Leroy E. Brunei said in 1957: "The weigh of the evidence is increasingly pointing to one direction: that (54) smoking is one of the causative factors in lung cancer." The initial reports had the heaviest impact, so (55) total cigarette production dropped in 1953 and again in 1954. (56) reports appeared to have less (57) on smoking habits, and by 1957 cigarette production had (58) above the 1952 level. (59) four voluntary health organizations urgued president John F. When its report, Smoking and Health, was released in early 1964, cigarette consumption again declined (63) . Pipe and cigar smoking increased. More than 350, 000 copies of the report were contributed and sold. (64) abstracts and pamphlets were prepared by the Public Health Service and other organizations (65) a massive educational campaign on the hazards of cigarette smoking.

First Aid First aid is
emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful
medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain
vital signs including pulse, temperature, an unobstructed airway (气道), and
breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from
worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as
quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can
make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and provider's level of
knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as
knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example,
can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) injury and paralysis (瘫痪).
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply
to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The
victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested,
and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene,
asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of
the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and
preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim
should be checked for medical bracelet (手镯) or card that describes special
medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may
suffer further injury, do not move the victim. First aid
requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening
conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known by the
acronym (首字母缩写词) ABC, which stands for: A—Airway: Is it open
and unobstructed? B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look,
listen, and feel for breathing. C—Circulation: Is there a
pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin color and temperature for
additional indications of circulation problems. Once obvious
injuries have been evaluated, the injured person's head should be kept in a
neutral position in line with the body. If no evidence exists to suggest
potential skull or spinal injury, place the injured person in a comfortable
position. Positioned on one side, a victim can vomit without choking or
obstructing the airway.

Before any period of exercise it is
well worth spending two or three minutes warming up with a series of simple
stretching exercises. This not only helps your joints(关节) to move easily but
also prepares all your muscle groups for more energetic activity. It is rather
like a cat stretching itself before it springs into action. Here are four
movements to do in an easy and unhurried way, gently stretching each action
without forcing it. Repeat each movement ten times, breathing normally
throughout. Ⅰ. Standing with your feet apart, push both arms out
straight in front of you, fingertips touching. Raise them above your head, then
down to the sides pushing each arm backwards at the same time.
Ⅱ. Standing with your feet apart, and hands on hips(臀部). Tip your head
back and look straight up to the ceiling. Roll your head round slowly to face
the right, then the floor, then the left, and finally up at the ceiling again.
Repeat in the other direction. Ⅲ. Standing with your feet apart
and hands on your sides, lean first to the right and then to the left, sliding
the hand down the side of the leg. Ⅳ. Standing feet apart and
arms out straight in front, with your eyes fixed on your right hands, swing your
right arm round to the right, keeping it straight, as far as it will go. Return
it to the front and repeat with the left arm.
单选题There seems to be a close relationship between drinks and one's life. The adolescent(少年)usually loves soft drinks for their sweetness and variety. He knows nothing of sadness and his taste of life is sweetness to the exclusion of all the others. In his eyes, the world is full of facets just as soft drinks are varied in flavor. Youth sees him on a job or in love. Now, soft drinks will have to give way to coffee, which is bitter yet somewhat sweet and fragrant. It gives a stimulating sensation suggestive of maturity, appealing to him, as he is fickle and moody. At his stage, he begins his career full of ambition and ideals, on the other hand he also needs and aspires after a home of his own. However, either his work or his love affairs may bring small setbacks, for which he is sometimes seen forcing a tearful smile and sometimes smiling through his tears. Considerations of gains and losses seem to him an enjoyment as well as a torture. Middle age turns him to Chinese tea that gives a delicate fragrance very gradual to come out, only discernable off and on. It is bland an elegant, deep and profound. It never stimulates your sense of taste but a lip of it will leave a faint fragrance lingering in your mouth, Free from impractical longings and fully aware of the evanescent of the sunset, he cherishes every minute of the day and each day of his is sweetened with a simple but real happiness. The elderly drinks plain boiled water which is devoid of saccharin, caffeine or theophyline (茶碱). It tastes insipid yet a slow sipping will doubtless yield a wee bit of sweetness. He has been tossed in life's storms and taught by rough and bitter experience to know better than to care about glories and successes which appear to him now as transient as a fleeting cloud. For this is the time he can sit comfortable in an armchair letting his mind wander. All that happened in the past and all that exist in the world seem to him as plain and insipd as water...
