单选题Living Alone Could Be Good for Your Weight
Good news for people living alone: A forthcoming paper shows that single adults—of any sexual orientation—are physically healthier when it comes to body mass index (BMI). The study, which appears in the January edition of the
Journal of Family Issues
, found that living without a partner—either divorced or never married—is associated with lower body weight.
On the other hand, co-habiters and married people, whether male or female, had higher BMIs, a calculation of weight and height that studies have linked to chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancers, and, ultimately, higher rates of mortality.
Sociologist Jay Teachman of Western Washington University used 20 years of data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Study of Youth and more than 3,000 participants to examine body weight, marital status, and what he calls relationship "transitions"—that is, breakups.
He tracked people"s BMIs from adolescence to middle age (between 39 and 42 years old) and found people experienced a short-term weight loss after divorce, which he believes is probably stress-induced. Generally, Teachman thinks, couples that live together are heavier because they"re more likely to share meals and cook together.
"The divorce effect fades over time," Teachman told
Science of US
. "But the data show that "the appearance effect" persists. Single people are thinner and likely more concerned about how they look because they are in the dating market."
His research is a departure from some of the conventional wisdom that coupled people tend to be fitter—and adds a wrinkle to the numerous links between marriage and positive health outcomes. Nevertheless, Teachman acknowledges a caveat in his work: The difference in body weight between a married and single individual was about three pounds at any point in time. At higher BMIs, a three-pound spread could push the average respondent into the obese category—and the individuals in this study were fairly young. Since the data cut at age 42, people still had a lot of potential weight-gaining decades ahead of them.
单选题Defending the Theory of Evolution Still Seems Needed Judith S. Weis, a biology professor who serves as president of the American Institute of Biological Sciences(AIBS) is leading a nationwide effort to" defend" the theory of evolution. Weis leads the effort in the face of what the institute views as opposition and indifference from school boards and government entities. The Institute believes that the teaching of evolution in America is being diminished by the teaching of creationism as well as by an overall lack of teaching Darwin's theory in high school. "There's nothing that requires schools to teach evolution. Sometimes teachers in high schools just leave it out. However from the point of view of biologists, evolution is the central theory of biology upon which everything is based," said Weis. "Unfortunately, teaching evolution has become a political issue in many parts of the country and AIBS, as a representative of biologists, wanted to be a major force speaking out in favor of its teaching. " Weis said the institute is working together with the American Geological Institute and the National Association of Biology Teachers and its 80 - plus member organizations to address the political and legislative threats to teaching evolution. In states challenging its teaching, the institute responds by sending letters to school boards and state legislatures, by providing testimony at public meetings and by notifying members and affiliated organizations. AIBS, with more than 80 member societies and 250,000 members, has established an email system enabling scientists and teachers in each state, and member societies, to keep each other informed about threats to the teaching of evolution. Darwin's theory of evolution holds that living things change and adapt to their environment and that present - day species (including human beings) are descended from earlier species through modification by natural selection. The theory has been accepted by scientists for nearly 100 years, Weis said, and has been refined, extended and strengthened over the years by findings, in developmental biology. Discoveries in genetics, molecular biology and genomics - all of which provide significant benefits for human health - would not be possible without the underlying knowledge of evolution. And, Weis adds," modern molecular biology and genomics have increased our understanding of how evolution works. "Nonetheless, evolution remains a politically, if not scientifically, controversial issue. Weis said that this year alone, seven states have had either local or statewide efforts to water down the teaching of evolution, or" balance" it with the teaching of creationism - a religious belief that different species were created separately by a higher power, such as God. "Rarely does anyone now use the word 'creationsm' , because that's too obvious. "Weis said, "The current terminology is 'intelligent design. '/
单选题Smart Exercise
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says: "While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can literally cause physical changes in the brain."
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician (儿科医师), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning," says Margaret.
Older people can beef up their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants, exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain"s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

单选题Old And Active It is well-known that life expectancy is longer in Japan than in most other countries. A (1) report also shows that Japan has the longest health expectancy in the world. A healthy long life is the result of the (2) in social environment. Scientists are trying to work (3) exactly what keeps elderly Japanese people so healthy, and whether there is a lesson to be (4) from their lifestyles for the rest of us. Should we (5) any changes to our eating habits, for instance, or go jogging each day before breakfast? Is there some secret (6) in the Japanese diet that is particularly (7) to the human body? Another factor (8) to the rapid population aging in Japan is a decline in birthrate. Although longer life should be celebrated, it is (9) considered a social problem. 单选题What Is a Dream? For centuries, people have wondered about the strange things that they dream about. Some psychologists say that this nighttime activity of the mind has no special meaning. Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us about a person's mind and emotions. Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way. The Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud, was probably the first person to study dreams scientifically. In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expressions of a person's wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung was once a student of Freud's. Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicate a message to the dreamer. He thought people could learn more about themselves by thinking about their dreams. For example, people who dream about falling may learn that they have too high an opinion of themselves. On the other hand, people who dream about being heroes may learn that they think too little of themselves. Modern-day psychologists continue to develop theories about dreams. For example, psychologist William Domhoff from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believes that dreams are tightly linked to a person's daily life, thoughts, and behavior. A criminal, for example, might dream about crime. Domhoff believes that there is a connection between dreams and age. His research shows that children do not dream as much as adults. According to Domhoff, dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop. He has also found a link between dreams and gender. His studies show that the dreams of men and women are different. For example, the people in men's dreams are often other men, and the dreams often involve fighting. This is not true of women's dreams. Domhoff found this gender difference in the dreams of people from 11 cultures around the world, including both modern and traditional ones. Can dreams help us understand ourselves? Psychologists continue to try to answer this question in different ways. However, one thing they agree on this: If you dream that something terrible is going to occur, you shouldn't panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that some terrible event will actually take place. It's important to remember that the world of dreams is not the real world.

{{B}}The Body Thieves{{/B}} In the early nineteenth
century in Britain, many improvements were being made in the world of medicine.
Doctors and surgeons were becoming more knowledgeable about the human body.
Illnesses that had been fatal a few years before were now curable. However,
surgeons had one problem. They needed dead bodies to cut up, or dissect (解剖).
This was the only way that they could learn about the flesh and bones inside the
body, and the only way to teach new surgeons to carry out operations.
The job of finding these dead bodies was carried out by an unpleasant
group of people called "body snatchers". They went into graveyards (墓地) at night
and, using wooden shovels to make less noise, dug up any recently buried bodies.
Then they took the bodies to the medical schools and sold them. A body could be
sold for between £5 and £10, which was a lot of money at that time. The doctors
who paid the body snatchers had an agreement with them—they never asked any
questions. They did not desire to know where the bodies came from, as long as
they kept arriving. The most famous of these body snatchers were
two men from Edinburgh called William Burke and William Hare. Burke and Hare
were different because they did not just dig up bodies from graveyards. They got
greedy and thought of an easier way to find bodies. Instead of digging them up,
they killed the poorer guests in Hare's small hotel. Dr Knox, the respected
surgeon they worked for, never asked why all the bodies they brought him had
been strangled (勒死). For many years Burke and Hare were not
caught because, unsurprisingly, the bodies of their victims were never found by
the police. They were eventually arrested and put on trial in 1829. The judge
showed mercy to Hare and he was released but Burke was found guilty and his
punishment was to be hanged. Appropriately, his body was given to the medical
school and he ended up on the dissecting table, just like his victims. In one
small way, justice was done. Now, over 150 years later, surgeons
do not need the help of criminals to learn their skills. However, the science of
surgery could not have developed without their rather gruesome (令人毛骨悚然的)
help.
