单选题 'Tomorrow we'll see the Golden Gate Bridge.' said Peter. 'I've never seen a golden bridge before.' Peter's father smiled, but said nothing. Peter would soon see the bridge. The next morning, his father took Peter to the bridge. How big it looked! And the bridge was red! 'It isn't named for its colour,' said his father. 'It's named for the Golden Gate.' 'What's the Golden Gate?' asked Peter. 'A gate is either an opening, or a thing that closes an opening,' said his father. 'The Golden Gate is an opening in the land. Water from the sea comes through this opening into San Francisco Bay.' 'Oh', said Peter. 'And the bridge is over the opening. But why is the opening called the Golden Gate?' 'Years ago men came here to took for gold. Many came by ship. For them it was a gate to gold.' 'Well, I still think the bridge should look golden.' When peter got home, he sent a letter to a newspaper. In the letter he said: 'Red is not the right colour for the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge should look golden, the way most people think it does.' Peter sent all the money he had saved with his letter. 'This money is to help paint the bridge, 'he wrote. Many people read Peter's letter. Right away, things began to happen! Some people sent money. A big company gave real gold. But not all the people wanted to change the colour of the bridge. Will the Golden Gate Bridge ever be golden?

单选题 Everything has a name. All people, places, and things have names. For example, Jenny is the name of a student from England. England is the name of her country. Cities and towns have names, too. Schools and office buildings also have names. All things have names. For example, tomato, potato and bean are names of vegetables. Apple, orange and banana are names of fruits. Names are important. We use names every day. When we meet a new person, we usually ask, 'What's your name?' It is important to learn a person's name. Most people have two names. Some people have more names. Names are different all over the world. In Jenny' s class, Jenny must learn the names of students from all over the world. This is very difficult because the names are very different. In the United States, most people have a first name, a middle name, and a last name. Parents choose the first and middle names for their baby. There are names for boys and names for girls. For example, John, Peter, Tom, and Mike are all names for boys. Elizabeth, Betty, Susan, and Mary are all names for girls. The last name is the family name. Usually it is the father' s family name. In a family, the mother, the father, and the children usually have the same last name. Sometimes a person has a nickname(绰号) ,too. A nickname is a special name. It is not a person's real name. Abraham Lincoln's nickname was 'Honest Abe'. An honest person always tells the truth, and Abe is short for Abraham. Because he was an 'honest person, his nickname was ' Honest Abe'. Pele (贝利) is a nickname, too. The football player's real name is Edison Arantes de Nascimento, but everyone calls him Pele. Do you have a nickname? Names are different all over the world. They can be long or short, hut they are always very important.

单选题 There was a river with a small town on either side of it. The towns were linked by a bridge. One day, a hole appeared in the bridge. Both towns agreed that the hole should be mended. However, disagreement came up as to who should mend it. Each town thought that it had a better reason for the other to mend the hole. The town on the right bank said that it was at the end of the road, so the left-bank town should mend the hole. The town on the left bank, on the other hand, insisted that all the traffic came to the right-bank town, so it was in their interest to mend the bridge. The quarrel went on and on, and so did the hole. The more it went on, the more the hostility between the two towns grew. One day a man fell into the hole and broke his leg. People from both towns questioned him closely about whether he was walking from the right bank to the left or from the left bank to the right, in order to decide which town should be blamed for the accident. But he could not remember, since he got drunk that night. Some time later, a ear was crossing the bridge and broke an axle (轴) because of the hole. Neither town paid any attention to the accident, as the traveler was not going from one to the other, but was merely passing through. The angry traveler got out of the ear and asked why the hole was not mended. On hearing the reason, he declared, 'I'll buy this hole. Who's the owner?' Both towns at once declared that they owned the hole. 'One or the other, whoever owns the hole must prove it. ' 'How shall we prove it?' asked both sides. 'That' s simple. Only the owner of the hole has the right to mend it. I' ll buy the hole from whoever mends the bridge. ' People from both towns rushed to do the job while the traveler smoked a cigar and his driver changed the axle. They mended the bridge in no time and asked for the money for the hole. 'What hole?' The traveler looked surprised. 'I can' t see any hole. I' ve been looking for a hole for several years now. I' m prepared to pay a good. price for it, but there' s no hole here. Are you pulling my leg or what?' He got into his car and drove off.

单选题 Although there may be thousands of different kinds of jobs, as I see it there are basically only two kinds of work. One is the sort that in the main is done for its own sake. It has little to do with bosses, or clerks or wages and it usually proves rewarding in itself. The other sort is normally done in return for a weekly wages in factories, on building sites or down in mines. A research scientist may find his income quite a lot for doing what he would do anyway even if he were rich. Others grumble. But could you find such a person who has never grumbled all his life? The worst things of all is having a job where there are no consolations whatever. A factory worker says, 'For eight hours a day, five days a week. I'm the exception to the rule. That life can't exist in a vacuum. Work to me is a great loss, and I begrude (吝啬) every precious minute of my time that it takes.' Another man says, 'I have little other interest in the job than getting money on Friday and getting out of the building as fast as I can.' An office clerk may say, 'An office clerk produces nothing. He runs a paper chase which goes on from year to year, and seems completely pointless. How can there be anything but boredom in it for him?' An advertising copy-writer, guilty of earning so much just for writing the ads, says, 'Every time I'm asked to write the lable for a tin of beans I feel absurd. And every time my cheque arrives I'm glad. I'm not as little as the girl who works the machine that puts the bean in the tin.' What are we working for anyway? Money. Nothing else. If your work is not what you fancy, if you have no interest in it, then the work is a bore. Don't you agree?
