单选题Mass media are tools of communication. Mass media can be divided into two groups: print media and electronic media. By print media, we mean books, newspapers and magazines. Electronic media include television, computer, radio and movie. Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered audience. They extend our ability to talk to each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space. There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us. Firstly, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to obtain on their own. Secondly, mass media help us to arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate all sides of a certain issue. Thirdly, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them. Fourthly, the media also entertain. All of the media make efforts to try to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is a prime medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is estimated that in the future, the entertainment function of mass media will become even more important than it is now.

单选题For years, children in the industrial areas of Europe and America seldom left their smoky cities to see the beauties of the countryside. This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but they were too far from the city to permit people to make a round trip between morning and nightfall. In 1970, a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory or hostel for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small amount of money. The idea was a success. A few years later, the schoolhouse was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. As a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Hostel. Today, young students of every country can meet in the hostel and get to know each other. When young people arrive at a hostel, they have only to show their cards of membership in a hostel organization in their own country. This card will permit them to use the facilities of hostels all over the world for very low prices. Often, at the evening meal a group of boys and girls from various parts of the country or the world will happen to meet at the same hostel. They may put their food together and prepare a dinner with many kinds of dishes. Sometimes a programme will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs or short talk followed by a question period. One can learn a lot of things about other places, just by meeting people who come from those places. For this reason, a few weeks spent "hostelling" can he just as useful a part of one"s education as classes in school.

单选题 Is language, like food, a basic human need without which a child at a critical period of life can be starved and damaged? Judging from the experiment of Frederick Ⅱ in the thirteenth century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the babies died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the ability to survive is seriously influenced. Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick Ⅱ Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive (不敏感的) to the signals (信号) of the baby, whose brain is made to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed. Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed order and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be clever. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes vowel-like sounds, at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands, at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four he knows his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than grammar.
