填空题This year I decided to do something to regain my good name as a kindly uncle. My nephew Tony had never forgiven me for the dictionary I had bought him as a birthday present last year. His parents had no reason to be thankful to me either because the year before, I had
1
their dear son with a pot of paste and some funny picture instead of
2
them into a book, Tony had naturally covered every wall in the house with them. This year therefore, 1 decided to let him
3
for himself.
We went into a big shop, but Tony was very particular about toys. Although I tried to show him toy after toy, he was not to be
4
. Then I saw: he suddenly became excited; he had discovered something he really liked: a large tin dram. I was quite happy too until I thought what Tony"s mother would say when she saw it. Nobody would get any
5
for weeks! I led Tony away
6
: saying that the dram was too expensive.
Tony asked for permission to go off on his own and I made the most of my chance to sit down and
7
my aching feet. Fifteen minutes passed but there was still no sign of Tony. I began to get
8
and got up to look for him. I asked a young lady if she had seen a little boy in a grey suit. She looked about her helplessly and pointed out that there were so many small boys in grey suits. I was just going to call the police for help, when I saw a strange

dressed in strange orange clothes. He was wearing a false beard and had a caveman"s axe in one hand and a space gun in the other. It was, of course, Tony, who informed me at once that he was the first

to fly into space.

填空题Shopping habits in the United States have changed greatly in the last quarter of the 20th century. Early in the 1900s most American towns and cities had a Main Street. Main Street was always the
1
of a town. This street was lined on the both sides with many
2
businesses. Here, shoppers walked into stores to look at all sorts of merchandise: clothing, furniture, hardware, groceries. In addition, some shops offered
3
. There shops included drugstores, restaurants, shoe repair stores, and barber or hairdressing shops. But in the 1950s, a change began to
4
place. Too many automobiles had crowded into Main Street while too few parking places were
5
to shoppers. Because the streets were crowded, merchants began to look with interest at the open spaces outside the city limits. Open space is what their car driving customers
6
. And open space is what they got when the first shopping centre was built. Shopping centers, or rather malls,
7
as a collection of small new stores away from crowded city centers. Attracted by hundreds of free parking space, customers were drawn away from
8
areas to outlying malls. And the growing
9
of shopping centers led in turn to the building of bigger and better stocked stores. By the late 1970s, many shopping malls had almost developed into small cities themselves. In addition to providing the

of the stop shopping, malls were transformed into landscaped parks, with benches, fountains, and outdoor entertainment.

change can sound like an environmentalist scare tactic, meant to force us out of our cars and restrict our lifestyles.
Comforting thoughts, perhaps. Unfortunately, however, the Earth has some discomforting news. From Alaska to the snowy peaks of the Andes the world is heating up right now, and fast. Globally, the

Several recent studies have found that being randomly (随机地)
assigned to a roommate of another race can lead to increased tolerance but also
to a greater likelihood (可能性) of conflict. Recent reports found
that lodging with a student of a different race may decrease prejudice and
compel students to engage in more ethnically diverse friendships.
An Ohio State University study also found that black students living with
a white roommate saw higher academic success throughout their college careers.
Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure. In a
New York Times article, Sam Boakye - the only black student on his freshman year
floor -said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove."
Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students
in residences. According to two recent studies, randomly
assigned roommates of different races are more likely to experience conflicts so
strained that one roommate will move out. An Indiana University
study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two white
roommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester.
Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the
findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have
interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race," she said.
At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for
housing. "One of the great things about freshman housing is
that, with some exceptions, the process throws you together randomly," said
Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of
integration." "I've experienced roommate conflicts between
interracial students that have both broken down stereotypes and reinforced
stereotypes," said one Penn resident advisor (RA.. The RA of two years added
that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding
(融合), there were also "jarring cultural confrontations." The RA
said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same
race. Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations
based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of
the students need to be studied and explained.
