单选题Dear Ann, Are you free to come to dinner here at 8:00 next Saturday? My brother Paul is coming and is bringing a friend of his called Tom Edwards. You haven"t met Tom but I think you will like him. He"s an assistant manager at the Gate Theater and will be able to tell you a- bout the actors. Paul says Tom gets little salary and doesn"t often get enough to eat, so he has asked me to have roast beef (烤牛肉) and pudding (布丁) for dinner, with apple pie (苹果派) to follow. He will probably call between now and Saturday, to say that it would be a good idea to start with a soup like oxtail! I know you don"t usually eat heavy (难消化的) meals of this kind, but I hope the conversation won"t be so heavy. Anyway, come if you can. Love, Mary

单选题根据下面短文回答下列问题。 Most American families have one or two parents and one or two children each. Children in the US will leave their parents' home when they grow up. They usually live far from their parents because they want to find good jobs. They often write to their parents or telephone them. And they often go to visit their parents on holidays. Parents usually let their children choose their own jobs. Americans think it is important for young people to decide on their lives by themselves. Children are asked to do some work around their home. And in many families, children are paid for doing some housework so that they learn how to make money for their own use.

单选题根据下面短文回答下列问题。 Mrs. Baker's sister was ill. She had someone to look after her from Monday to Friday, but not at the weekend, so every Friday evening Mrs. Baker used to go off to spend the weekend with her at her home in a neighboring town. But as Mr. Baker could not cook, so he had arranged for(安排) his sister to come over and spend the weekend looking after him at their home. This means that Mr. Baker had quite a busy time when he came home from work on Friday evenings. First he had to drive home from the railway station. Then he had to drive his wife to the station to catch her train. And then he had to wait until his sister's train arrived, so as to take her to his house. Of course, on Sunday evenings he had to drive his sister to the station to catch her train back home, and then wait for his wife's train, so as to bring her home. One Sunday evening he had seen his sister off on her train and was waiting for his wife's arrival, when a porter, who had often seen him at the station, came over and spoke to him. "You are having a lot of fun," he said. "But one day one of those women is going to catch you with the other, and then you will be in real trouble!/

单选题When people become good at doing the things they like they find themselves. Many young people are good at doing things they do not like; many other young people would like to do something at which they are not good. Also many do not think they are good at anything, and do not know what they would like to do. None of them are happy. It is impossible to decide whether one likes something until one has tried it. Trying something new is important. Give each idea a fair chance. If you have decided to try out something new, also decide how long you will stick to it. Then you can make a fair decision. The best thing to judge is not the final goal, but the work which takes you to reach that goal. Almost everybody would like to be highly skilled in doing something, but becoming highly skilled at anything calls for a great deal of time and effort. Finding oneself means not only discovering what one is good at and what one likes; it also means discovering what one is not good at and does not like. So trying something and failing can have its good side. It tells you that you are not fit that particular area and should not take it as your goal.

单选题 根据下面短文回答下列问题。 The day was like any other day in his life. Tom walked past the shop on the street corner. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt happy to see that the pair of shoes he wanted very much were still there. Looking down, he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have them for his birthday. He sadly walked away and thought how to tell his mother about it. He knew she would give him anything he liked if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once because he didn't want his mother to be worried about him. So he went to the park and sat on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair. He notice that the boy moved the wheel with his hands. Tom looked at his own feet, "It's much better than being without feet." He thought, there was no reason to feel sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was happier.
