The urban distribution of universities is influenced by both contemporary and regional factors, and there is no universal pattern. The combination of high-level universities and important cities we see today is the result of long-term interaction between universities and cities, and there are still many exceptions where high-level universities are located in ordinary cities. This study provides statistics on the city distribution of the top 500 universities in the 2021 QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Soft Sciences, and outlines the diversity of the city distribution of the world's top universities in the form of data. The study shows that the city distribution of universities is influenced by a variety of factors, and the level of development of universities and the status of the cities in which they are located do not determine one another, but make each other. The city provides the basic conditions for the university, while the university adds cultural thickness to the city.In a symbiotic and co-prosperous relationship,a university built in an ordinary city may also become a high level university. We need to face the diversity of university-city distribution, not to blindly follow a single model, and find the appropriate path for the development of different universities and cities, only then can we realize the synergistic development of universities and cities to the greatest extent.
