Self-presentation in an autobiography always starts from a certain identity.Stephen William Hawking was a patient of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and decades of his life was spent in wheelchair. His great breakthrough in theoretical physics together with his disability has attracted the whole world’s attention. However, rarely did Stephen Hawking narrate his disability in his autobiography My Brief History. On this basis, this article tends to explore its themes of identities from the perspectives of the writer, the readers and the identities’connotations. It is this article’s finding that constructing a successful identity, hiding the disabled identity and denouncing medical and disability discourses are the autobiography’s main focus. These themes reflect Stephen Hawking’s efforts of stripping off discourse discipline as such to identify his normalcy.
