摘要
祭祖是中国民间节日里常见的民俗活动,也是中国传统民俗文化非常重要的一部分。《红楼梦》小说的英译本是国外读者了解中国文化的一扇窗口,为了有效地将小说中的祭祖民俗活动传译给西方读者,英国汉学家霍克思在其译本中通常选择直译的方法来保留原文文化意蕴。考虑到西方读者缺少和汉语读者类似的文化认知,霍克思还经常采用增补的策略来解释文化信息,甚至不惜对原文的表达形式进行了一定程度的调整和改写,为读者扫清阅读障碍、展示原作魅力。
Ancestor worship is symbolic of Chinses folk culture,which is commonly seen in Chinese people’s life,especially in traditional Chinese holidays.Translations of《Hongloumeng》function as a window for foreign readers to know about Chinese culture.In order to effectively translate the ancestor worship depicted in the novel,David Hawkes,a British Sinologist,often resort to literal translation to retain the cultural flavor of the original.What’s more,addition of cultural information is another frequently used translation method used by him out of the consideration of foreign readers who lack of the shared cultural cognition with the Chinese reader.Sometimes,adjustment and rewriting of the source text are made in order to clear reading obstacles for foreign readers and bring the charm of the source text to them.
