Before the United States released the"Open Door"policy, the American nationals in China had founded the American Association of China under the initiative of American businessmen in China. This organization was dominated by American commercial interests in China, and meanwhile, the missionary interests and the security of American nationals were also considered. The Association was committed to pushing the US government to actively intervene in China’s affairs,so as to expand its interest in China. From 1898 to 1913,the Association made positive responses to the development of the late Qing politics, such as the Incident of 1900,the negotiations during 1901—1902,the SinoAmerican negotiations over commercial treaties during 1902—1903 and the boycott of American products in 1905.It exerted different influences on the development and results of the above-mentioned events.Tracing the history of the Association helps reveal the role of American nationals in China during the late Qing dynasty so that we can get a full grasp of the historical development of the late Qing dynasty.
