Family revolution in modern China seems to be a widely recognized, but in fact less well understood movement.Viewed from its cognitive sense, the essential meaning of family revolution has been misunderstood by its followers and later researchers from the beginning. As a fact, this movement was both destructive and constructive. Its destructiveness comes not only from direct appeals as family damage, but also from the changes of family routines, such as transferring the responsibility of children s education to the society from the beginning of the 19th to the 20th centuries.Further, the most radical revolutionaries around the May 4th Movement also emphasized that affection is the foundation of a new family, and advocated to extend love into the society, which best reflected the constructiveness of the family revolution. After the establishment of the National Government, the validity of marriage entered the formal discussion of the legislative body, showing the foresight of repositioning the family from a basic level. In the past, based on reading fiction, both Chinese and foreign observers accepted the destructive side of family revolution as the norm, but neglected its constructive side. Thus, this paper concludes that such a global misunderstanding requires a fundamental clarification and correction.
