Simultaneous interpreters tend to demand direct visual access to the speaker in their interpreting process. As a form of visual modality input, the speaker’s kinesics seems to play a certain role in simultaneous interpreting.Based on data collected from an experiment and interviews with eleven trainee conference interpreters working between Chinese and English, this article analyzes whether the interpreters’direct visual access to the speaker’s gestures has any effect in simultaneous interpreting.Qualitative analysis of the interpretation done by the trainee interpreters for two speeches, respectively with and without seeing the speaker’s gestures in delivery, shows that interpreters perform better when they have direct visual access to the speaker’s gestural cues.Further analysis of the transcriptions and feedback from the interpreters reveal that interpreters look at the speaker consciously in simultaneous interpreting. The effect of direct access to the speaker’s gestures may be twofold. It is psychological,as it makes interpreters feel being on-site and have a certain level of comfort and assurance of what they have to communicate;and perceptual,as it enhances interpreters’understanding of the speaker’s messages more accurately.
