The Weng Family in Changshu, represented by the four generations of Weng Xincun,Weng Tonghe,Weng Zenghan, and Weng Binsun, left a considerable amount of diary documents, including a considerable part of the records of diseases and diagnosis and treatment. When a disease occurs, members of the Weng family would invite doctors from without via self-recommendation and other channels that were recommended by them.Among the invited doctors are Confucian doctors, monk doctors, and Western ones. The appearance of monk doctors, especially Western ones, can be viewed as an important index to a medical history of the traditional scholars in the late Qing Dynasty. In addition, the results of the medical interactions between the three include not only the admission of doctors but also the presentation of the voices of the patients:the patient’s pain is transformed into a sentimental narrative in the diary. As a result, the patient’s disease expression can be more nuancedly displayed in the diary literature.
