Animal-and-man motifs were often found on bronzes dated to the Shang and early Western Zhou periods. In depiction,a man and a tiger,or a man and a breast, were closely connected, interacting. The design, hence, set them apart from most other motifs employed during the same period. The bronzes with this special animal-and-man design had been in use for a considerably long period of time, developed or copied in different cultural zones.Their geographical distribution and dates of use, hence, reveal intriguing notes about the transmission of bronze-casting practices, and possibly also of the spread of associated ritual meanings among the many bronze-using societies now identified archaeologically. From what is observed at the present, the animal-and-man design was probably first developed and used in both the Huai River valleys and the mid-Yangtze River regions. The Shang bronze casters at Anyang acquired the concept, modified it,and applied that to decorate local bronzes. The Shang designs,in turn, left an impact on their succeeding Western Zhou bronze casters, who further developed and applied particularly on bronze weapons and chariot fittings.
