After the completion of the 25 de Abril Bridge in Portugal in 1966,the traffic volume continued to increase, resulting in many diseases. In 1996,Portuguese engineers began to renovate and retrofit the bridge for three years without interrupting traffic, where the existing 4-lane roadway bridge was retrofitted into a highway railway dual bridge of 6-lane and double track railways, two auxiliary main cables were added above the original two main cables respectively, the lower deck steel trusses were replaced, the roadway deck was widened, and the structural health monitoring system was installed.Although the cost of the retrofitting project is high, the operation effect over the past 20 years shows that the joint working performance between the old and new structures is good, and there are few diseases. The structural health monitoring system can monitor the imposed action and the structural response in real time, providing reference for the operation and maintenance of the bridge. The retrofitting and widening measures of the bridge break through the traditional idea that the main cable cannot be replaced, which is still the first of its kind, and provide brand new ideas for the maintenance and retrofitting of bridges of in-service suspension bridge in the future.
