Interpreting contests are often used to select top interpreting trainees and are conducive to academic exchanges and development.Their assessments have the characteristics of both interpreting education and on-the-spot contests. This paper describes the quality assessment in“I Forum”,an English-Chinese campus interpreting contest,in which instructors, fellow interpreting trainees, and the audience serve as raters.By triangulating data collected from rating sheets, comments and after-contest interviews, this study finds that there are significant differences between the three groups of raters:The instructors give the highest ratings, the audience the lowest, and the instructors can significantly predict contestants’interpreting competence. The raters’ratings are closely related to their group identities, candidates’actual performance, and the contest itself. The Instructor raters are the determining voice in quality assessment in interpreting contests, while the peer raters and the audience are supplementary. The instructor-peer-audience rating design is proved to be reliable and serves its purpose well.
