The seven songs of Shang Yun Music by Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty and Shang Yun Music·Lao Hu Wen Kang Ci by Zhou She recorded in the Yuefu Poetry Collection are song lyrics of the 44th song and dance performance titled Shang Yun Music that was staged during the courtly Yuan Hui of the Liang Dynasty. This program consists of three parts:Lao Hu Wen Kang Ci,six songs of Hu dance, and seven songs of Shang Yun Music. The whole set of performances combines elements such as storytelling and speech address, singing, dancing, instrumental playing and mask theater, and absorbs the folk Nuo opera music and dance customs of the Jingchu region during the Southern Dynasties. It can be regarded as a divine song and dance drama that integrates Buddhist and Taoist influences, the musical traditions of both the Hu and Han ethnic groups, and the refined folk music, which was performed at the courtly Yuan Hui feast in the Liang Dynasty. Both the song and dance performance titled Shang Yun Music in the Liang Dynasty and“Li Bi Wen Kang Music”in the Sui Dynasty are derived from the adaptation of the Wen Kang Music created by the household of Yu Liang during the Eastern Jin Dynasty in order to commemorate Yu Liang’s passing.A comprehensive examination of the Liang Dynasty’s Yuefu Shang Yun Music from multiple dimensions including literature, thought, and art would greatly contribute to the deepening of research on ancient poetry, music, dance, and drama,as well as their interrelationships.
