企业"一把手"和"二把手"的价值观差异与企业创新:基于机器学习的经验证据

摘要 中国高质量发展急需发挥企业家在创新中的关键作用.如何发挥企业关键人物"一把手"董事长和"二把手"总经理在创新中的领导和协同作用是有待回答的重要管理问题.从企业董事长和总经理价值观差异的角度尝试回答这一问题.以沪深A股2008-2016年的上市公司为研究样本,采用前沿的机器学习方法评估了董事长—总经理在多个维度上的价值观差异对企业创新的预测能力,识别出对企业创新绩效预测能力相对最强的价值观差异的维度,用部分依赖图具体刻画董事长与总经理价值观差异结构与企业创新间的关系,并通过理论分析指出可能存在的影响机制.研究发现:(1)整体而言,董事长和总经理的价值观差异对企业创新绩效有较强的预测能力;(2)在价值观的不同维度中,董事长和总经理在不确定性规避价值观与制度性集体主义价值观2个维度上的差异对企业创新绩效的预测能力较强;(3)不确定性规避价值观差异与创新绩效的关系大致呈"U"型结构,董事长和总经理在该价值观维度上对创新绩效的影响发挥了"互补效应",而制度性集体主义价值观差异与创新绩效的关系呈现出先平缓后陡升的趋势,董事长和总经理在该价值观维度上对创新绩效的影响发挥了以"一把手"高制度集体主义为主的"秩序效应"和以"二把手"低制度集体主义为辅的"互补效应".研究结果对从企业关键人物出发解读促进创新发展的因素和模式具有重要的理论与实践启示. China's high-quality development urgently needs the key role of entrepreneurs in innovation.How to unleash the leadership and synergy effect of the"first-in-command"Chairman and"second-in-command"CEO in innovation is an important management question to be answered.We attempt to answer this question from the perspective of value differences between the"first-in-command"Chairman and the"second-in-command"CEO.Based on data on Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed firms from 2008 to 2016 and using the cutting-edge machine learning method,we evaluated the predictive ability of Chairman-CEO value differences in multiple dimensions on corporate innovation,identified the dimensions of value differences with the strongest predictive ability of corporate innovation performance,characterized the relationship between the Chairman-CEO value difference structure and corporate innovation using the partial dependence plots,and provided theoretical explanations of the relationships.The findings show that(1)the Chairman-CEO differences in multiple value dimensions as a whole had strong ability to predict the firm's innovation performance,(2)two dimensions had the strongest ability to predict the firm's innovation performance:uncertainty avoidance and institutional collectivismvalues,(3)the relationship between the uncertainty avoidance value difference and innovation performance was similar to the"U"shape,suggesting a"complementary effect"between Chairman and CEO with regard to their uncertainty avoidance;the relationship between the institutional collectivismvalue difference and innovation performance showed a gradually increasing trend,suggesting the"order effect"determined by the collectivism value of the"first-in-command"Chairman.The findings of this paper have important theoretical and practical implications for understanding the factors and models that promote innovation from the perspective of key corporate figures.
