摘要
There has long been an active debate on the interrelationships between population and the environment. While studies in China have exhibited very different opinions, the major concern has been the influence of the large population and its excessively rapid increase on environmental degradation. To what extent population is responsible for the ecological crisis? Is population the chief culprit of the recent explosive trend in environmental degradation? What role population policies can play in alleviating the ecological crisis? In this issue of "Population and Development Forum", three scholars are invited to write on such an important and complicated topic.
