The TLV diagram with a chart for divination incised on Slip No. 9 from the Hantomb at Yinwan has captured scholars' attentions since its first discovery in1993. However, how the diagram worked with the chart in choosing a good day during theHan dynasty is yet unclear. Based on a comparison with Xu Bochang's formula for thegame liubo and an analysis of the order arranging Chinese chronogram in the diagram, thepaper tries to explain how the TLV divination can be viewed as an appropriation of thegame liubo for ready use, which is not truly involved in the action of game-playing butborrows all the designs-pattern, terms and rules-from the game. The paper also points outthe written errors on the slip and offers a more comprehensive revision of the diagram.
