This essay examines population statistics for the Banner Garrison at the Yuanmingyuan from its establishment in 1724 through the fall of the Qing in 1914. The population of the garrison increased rapidly during the early years of its establishment but slowly in the later period when the number of households was stable, family size was small, imbalance in the sex ratio was high and the age structure was skewed.
