This essay tells us that Wu Cheng'en didn't look like the real author of the novel 'The Journey to the West' with one hundred chapters. The novel was, perhaps, found in Prince Lu's Mansion in Prince Duan's (Zhu Guanding)Period. Subjectively, the author of 'The Journey to the West' wanted to give publicity to the philosophy of the mind with 'the union of the three religions'. Objectively, however, Sun Wu-K'ung(The Monkey King) Was portrayed as the embodiment of the beauty of human nature with personality, ideal and of great abilities. The novel has thus unconsciously sung the praises of the spirit of pursuing personality and freedom, which was in step with the trend of cultural thought in the middle and the end of the Ming Dynasty.
