Abstract The first use of the term “decolonization” was not by M.Bonne in 1932,but much earlier.During its spread,the African countries,the nonaligned movement and scholars all over the world have had different views on the concept,or have changed their understanding accordingly.The author analyzes the reasons why Chinese scholars have seldom used the term.He argues that “decolonization” can be understood as a process which embodies two parallel movements——the colonized people's struggle for independence and the colonial metropolitan country's reaction.After political decolonization,economic decolonization is now being put on the agenda.The decolonization of history,culture and mentality, however,is a much more difficult task and should not be neglected.
