Jude the Obscure is Thomas Hardy's gloomiest novel. The disillusion of love, the loss of job,the collapse of hope and the death of the children all make it the masterpiece among Hardy's tragedies, and thus Hardy is always labeled as a pessimist. In fact, the ultimate purpose of Hardy's writing is to reveal the source of all tragedies,to awake the people and to construct the ideal new world.Behind the fierce attack is Hardy's optimistic faith of the future. Therefore,Hardy is far from a dark pessimist and his gloomiest writing promises readers a future world of happiness. He is an absolute optimist by nature.
