Abstract UG is a major linguistic theory exerting profound influence on SLA research. This paper is an attempt to demonstrate, with evidence and counter-evidence,the limitations of the explaining power and flaws of a UG position of SLA,and thereby points out that alternative approaches are necessary in SLA rescarch in order that the complicated subject can be described and explained completely and objectively.
