Abstract Modal verbs and vague language seem to play an important role in academic writing,though they have never been given adequate attention to in English language teaching.Through a detailed comparative analysis of 30 academic papers written by both Chinese and English speakers,the paper concludes that a correct use of modal verbs and vague language could promote the readability of an academic paper,especially its language appropriacy and accuracy,and the acceptability and objectiveness of its ideas.
