This article makes a comprehensive survey of the bronze vessels of the Yin-Shang period from various aspects such as the stratigraphical relation, distribution, combination, development and characteristic features of decorative patterns and inscriptions. The jue-cnps unearthed in an early Yin-Shang site at Erlitou Village in Yanshi county, Henan province, are the oldest bronze vessels ever found to date. In the early YinShang period all the bronze vessels are small, crude and of very few types. The walls of the body are thin. None of these vessels is found to bear a decorative pattern or inscription.More types of bronze vessels of a larger size are found in the middle Yin-Shang period. There is a fairly regular combination of vessels with simple decorative designs. The walls of the vessel body are still rather thin like those of the earlier period. The late Yin-Shang period represented by Yin Hsu (Anyang) is the height of the bronze culture. Vessels of this period may be divided into three stages. The onze vessels of the middle stage are similar to the early ones in shape, combination, decoration, and the close continuity of date. In this stage they are much improved technically in shape, decoration and casting, which is considered as a rapid developing period for bronze vessels. New systems and longer inscriptions are discovered in these of the late Yin Hsu stage. In places far from the political centre of the Shang dynasty are also found many bronze vessels of the Yin-Shang period, which might be the utensils and ritual vessels used by nobles in fief states. Most of them are the same like those unearthed in Zhengzhou and Anyang. Very few of them have any regional difference. This indicates that in the late Yin-Shang period a unified bronze culture is formed in the vast areas along the middle and lower reaches of the Huanghe (Yellow) and Changjiang (Yangtze) rivers with the Shang dynasty as its centre. At the end of the article, characteristic features of bronze vessels of the early western Zhou dynasty are stematically analyzed so as to give an idea of the lower limit of the bronze vessels of the Yin-Shang style.
