In 1975, two large wooden-chambered tombs belonging to the Chu State of the Spring and Autumn period were excavated at Ta-tien in Cbu-nan County, Shantung Province.
The tombs are both nearly square in shape while the passage is orientated to the east. Their pits are each divided into two parts, one for the coffin chamber and the other for funerary objects. Though already looted by tomb robbers, they still contained a considerable amount of tomb furniture. Tomb No. 1, which measures 10.35 by 9.4 metres at the bottom, contains an outer coffin and an inner coffin. Tomb No. 2 is similar in structure and size. The dead in both tombs was interred with ten human sacrifices which were not provided with coffins. Tomb No. 2 is provided at the bottom with a waist pit containing a dog sacrifice. The pottery and bronzes unearthed both contain the ting-tripod, stemmed tou-vessel (tun-vessel) and hu-vase. Moreover, each tomb is further provided with a bronze po bell and a set of nine bronze looped bells. A seventy-word inscription found on the looped bells unearthed from Tomb No. 2 shows that they were made by a member of the ruling family of the State of Chu named P'ing, who was apparently the tomb owner.
The State of Chu, a vassal state of the Chous in the Spring and Autumn period located to the southeast of the State of Ch'i, was annexed by the State of Ch'u in 431 B.C. Judging by the style of tomb furniture, Tomb No. 1 is slightly later in date than Tomb No. 2 and both probably date from the end of the Spring and Autumn period.
