The cemetery lies at the confluence of the Huangpo River and the Yangtze in thenorthern suburbs of Yi-ch'ang,Hupei Province.Between March 1971 and March1972 a total of forty-three tombs,of which six date from the Warring Statesperiod, thirty from the Western Han,and seven from the Eastern Han,were excavatedhere. In most cases, both the coffin and skeleton have already disintegrated. The Warring States tombs are all oblong earthen or rocky shaft tombs containing anumber of bronze and pottery objects.Among the objects unearthed are a Pa style 巴式bronze spearhead and a bronze seal in the Ch'in Dynasty script. The Western Han tombsare also oblong earthen shafts but occasionally provided with an entrance passage.Theirtomb furniture is richer and often consists of bronze and pottery vessels.Of some in-terest is the discovery of a bronze seal bearing a well-know surname of the Pa people. The Eastern Han tombs are mostly brick tombs. On the basis of a typological study of the bronze mirrors, coins, bronzes and potteryunearthed, the authors have established a more precise chronology for these tombs andshed much new light on the social life and the relations between the Han and Pa peoplesof this region in the Ch'in and Han periods.
