敦煌壁画、绢画中绘制了大量的地藏菩萨图像和以地藏菩萨为主体的“地藏十王厅”变相。三十年代,日本松本荣一先生在其《敦煌画的研究》一书中,论述了敦煌的地藏菩萨图像,依据的材料主要是斯坦因、伯希和掠去的部分绢画,利用敦煌壁画中的资料甚少,同时在绢画的搜集方面也有较大的遗漏,因而有缺乏全面之憾,所论述的主题是以“
Ksitigarbha is one of the four famous Budhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism. There are many his images in Dunhuang murals and scroll-paintings dated from the Tang and Song dynasties. Those images could be roughly divided into six catagories: (1) hand in mudra, or (2) both hands with beads, or (3) one hand with beads and the another with Buddhist monk's staff, or (4) hands with other objects, or (5) together with picture of Samsara Gatis, or (6) image weared hat. In later Tang, there appeared the picture of the Ksitigarbha together with the Ten Kings of the Hell which represented the story of Ksitigarbha supervised the Ten Kings who judged one's good and evils when one died. There are seventy-five Ksitigarbha images and twenty-four pictures of the Ksitigarbha together with the Ten Kings of the Hell in Dunhuang murals and scroll-paintings. They reflect the belief of Ksitigarbha in ancient Dunhuang.
