The paper consists of two parts. The firstpart argues that the aim of teaching in-tensive reading to senior students is to cultiv-ate their ability to make systematic rhetoricalanalysis of literature. Such an aim reflects thehypothesis of three levels of language and thetheory of three stages in foreign language tea-ching. This is intened to foster the students'metaphorical and logical thinking. An anticipatedoutcome of this approach is an increase in thestudents' capabilities to do philological researchwhich combines linguistic analysis with literarycomment. The second part of the paper is asample of such a systematic rhetorical analy-sis.
