The Dunhuang Manuscript of Platform Stra is an important text ofChan Buddhism,which draws the attention of many scholars. Now the manuscript S. 5475 of the Stra has been translated into English,French and Japanese etc.. Because alot Tong -jie-zi (Derivatives)were used,it is very difficult to understand theSutra, In the course of studying it,I find that before we study this manuscript,it is nec-essary to have a correct understanding on the derivatives which is a key to decipher themanuscript.In this paper,I give a careful comparative study on the following deriva- tives:1.起and 去,2.虽and须,3.诸and之and知,4.依and衣and 於,5.但and 坦,6.汝and以and与,7.是and事,示,时,8.第and定,9.为and谓,10.放and如,11.智and值,12.迷and名,etc..To judge by the derivatives,the conclusion can be reached that the manuscript fromthe Stra-Library served as s Buddhist text which was used in Northernwest China dur-ing the period of the Tang and Five Dynasties.
