The sites of the Keshengzhuang II culture have so far been discovered approxima- tely 80-90, including more than a dozen excavated. The data published indicate that the culture is mainly distributed in the valley of the Weishui River and on terraces by its tributaries, roughly from Tianshui in the west to Huayin in the east and from Changwu in the north to Huxian in the south. The culture has its own features distinct from other complexes. It falls into two types: one is represented by the Keshengzhuang site and can be called Keshengzhuang type, distributed in the western Guanzhong region and eastern Gansu; the other, by the Kang- jia site, named Kangjia type, in the eastern Guanzhong region and Shangluo Prefecture. According to stratigraphic evidence from the Zhaojialai and Shizuitou sites on one hand and that from Kangjia on the other, each of the Keshengzhuang type and the Kangjia site can be divided into an earlier period and a later one. The whole Keshengzhuang II culture dates from ca. 2400-2000 BC. Stratigraphic observations at Zhaojialai, Xiehu, Hengzhen, etc. and numerous C^(14)-da- ting analyses of objects unearthed show that the Keshengzhuang II culture is later than the Miaodigou II culture. In cultural aspect, the Keshengzhuang Type obviously inheri- ted achievements from the Huxizhuang type of Miaodigou II culture distributed in the Shaanxi region, and the Keshengzhuang II culture must have originated in the Miaodi- gou II cultural complex in Shaanxi. The Keshengzhuang II culture was pregnant with the basic elements of the typical Qijia culture. It shows strong symptoms of its evolution towards the Qijia. As for its successor, there is a chronological gap for hundreds of years between the Keshengzhuang II culture and the remains of the Nianzipo and Zhengjiapo sites held so far to be the main objects of researches on the predynastic Zhou culture, so it can hardly be said at present that the former culture was directly succeeded by the latter culture.
